Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have been type 2 diabetic for the past 15+ years and am presently taking metformin and trajenta. My doctor wants me now to add another tablet called junilept????
Does anyone else take such varied tablets and is this normal!
I am not good at controlling my diabetes and would value any advice on this and good weight loss ideas.
Thank you

Hello @Jokeav
Welcome to the forum, there is a great deal of knowledge and experience here and I hope we will be able to help you.
Although I have taken metformin for some time, I don't know about the other tablets that you mention, but others in the forum may be able to help with this.

In terms of controlling your diabetes, there are several eating solutions available and you need to find the one that suites you best. It is important though to ensure that it is something sustainable that you can continue for the long term.

Many of us on the forum find that following a low carb diet works well.
A good introduction to this is Maggie Davey's letter which shows how this lady changed her eating style.

It will help if you can find out which foods cause your blood sugars to rise, and eventually arrive at a lists that lets you maintain good blood sugar levels, that you enjoy eating, and fits your lifestyle in terms of how much preparation and cooking you like and have time to do.

A glucose monitor is a way to find this out, by testing before and 2 hours after eating. Also if you can keep a tally of the total number of carbs eaten in a day, your morning reading will guide you on working out how much you need to adjust.
test-review-adjust gives more information on this.

It is all trial and error, so try to be patient, you are aiming for the long term, and a diet that you can sustain.

Best wishes

Hi and welcome to the forum. Sorry that I don't have any experience of the drugs, other than Metformin. As Kay says I also do a low carb diet and found it excellent in both reducing weight and bg levels. It takes a bit of getting used to, I am a particularly fussy eater so have found it quite difficult at times, but most 'ordinary' people seem to really like the changes they make and wouldn't go back to how they used to eat. Other than a meter, which is an excellent tool, I have the Carbs and Cals book which also gives great information about so many foods and also portion sizes, showing pictures.
I would suggest having a good look around the forum and then ask any questions whatsoever, we are all here to help each other. Take care.

Welcome to the forum @Jokeav , I am glad that you have found us.

I have no experience of tablets, and have not heard of the ones you mention apart from Metformin.
Sorry not to be able to help with that.

There is plenty of information available on the various threads on here, so it will be worth a look around, as well as looking at the links that @Toucan has suggested. Hope weaver if you have any other questions feel free to ask. No questions are considered silly on here.

Trajenta is linagliptin so it's a gliclazide. No idea about the new one.

Presumably then in view of the linagliptin, you have been issued with a blood testing meter and strips, so what is your BG doing? And what have you done in the way of changing your diet to reduce the carbohydrate content? - because you absolutely need to do that in order to gain proper control of the diabetes, otherwise it is controlling you!

Welcome to the forum @Jokeav

I think it might be helpful for you to chat to a pharmacist or GP about your new medications, and exactly what it is that they do. Not just ‘they help with diabetes’, but exactly what their method of action is.

That way you will best know how to support them with changes to your diet, and activity - because meds are only ever part of the story. As a person with T1 who has to dose insulin for meals, I quickly learned the relationship between medication, food, and activity - and later other factors such as stress, excitement, illness, alcohol and dozens of other factors that can affect BG outcomes.

But for you I would suggest you focus on the ‘Big 3’ - medication, food, and activity.

These need to be in balance. After 15 years, and a variety of increases and changes to medication, perhaps you need to go back to basics and re-examine the potential effect of food choices and exercise as part of your diabetes toolkit?

There are lots of experienced folks here who can point you towards more BG-friendly foods and meals, and you have BG checking equipment to find out exactly how your current menu is performing, and then to make some tweaks and changes to test, review and adjust - https://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/test-review-adjust.html

Good luck and let us know how you get in 🙂
