Hi im newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I’m struggling with what to eat/do etc
any help would be appreciate..

Hi Larry and welcome. You have come to the right place for advice and support. Hopefully we will help you to head in the right direction soon.

Firstly, can you tell us a bit more about how you came to be diagnosed, what medication if any you have been prescribed for it and your HbA1c if you know it? This is usually a number of 48 or higher which is used to diagnose diabetes. 42-47 is pre-diabetic and below 42 is normal but diabetics can be anywhere from 48 up into 3 figure numbers so it helps to have an idea of where on the scale you are so we have an idea of how much work you may need to do on your diet and lifestyle to get towards the normal end of the scale. It also helps to have some idea of your BMI and fitness/activity levels/ability so we can make appropriate suggestions.

Hi I am not sure what the number is as I haven’t had information from my GP he just asked me to go to his surgery to have a pin prick test. He said I have to see a diabetic nurse soon i an on metformin 500g once a day pin prick level 9.3 I’m sorry I don’t know what to do now until I see the nurse . I don’t know what foods to eat or what foods to stay away from. I would like to know when to test my blood sugars .what foods to lower my blood sugars it’s a mine field at the moment any help would be very helpful

Dear Larry123,

I'm fairly recently diagnosed and recognise that motivation to get going and get it sorted. There's a lot to learn, and so much very good advice here that you have definitely come to the right place.

Whilst I was initially waiting for more information from Diabetic Nurse (DN here) - I didn't realise I had to ask for it - I cut out refined sugar and flour. That had a really positive effect quite quickly. My numbers were much higher than yours.

One piece of advice I see regularly here is don't try and move too quickly. Everyone is different and so there's no one size fits all. Most of us do a low carb/ high fat diet and test, test, test with a blood glucose monitor to see the impact of certain foods and learn what to avoid but you DN should help you understand that in the first instance. Ask lots of questions. I found there was always someone with more experience more than happy to answer whatever questions I've had.

Best of luck
Largess

Hi Larry and welcome. You’ll get help here threading your way through the minefield. The first thing to do is to buy yourself a meter (the pinned posts have lots of info and more experienced folks will be along soon) to test your own reaction to various foods. We’re all unique in this club.

But essentially it’s about carbs - all carbs - bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, beetroot, biscuits, puddings, cereals etc etc. It all turns to glucose in your blood. Keep a food diary and use your meter to measure your blood glucose before you eat and then two hours after you’ve eaten. You then, over time, build a picture of what you can and can’t eat.

It‘s not as frightening as it seems and you’ve access to a wealth of experience here.

Hello @Larry123 and welcome to our forum.
As you can see from the replies you have had, there is a lot of help and information available here.

There are also some useful items in the 'Learning Zone' (orange TAB at the top of the page), and if you want to know more about when to test then test-review-adjust may be helpful
