Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hello Folks - Just joined and looking for some help and pointers - as I am very scared but trying to remain plucky.

Quick Question I may call on your help and experience ...I had a A1C result of 34 a few months ago, before that it was 36. -

But most recently - Neurophysiologist confirmed sensory nerve damage in my feet and said ..." your diabetic.." I said, i wasnt and told of normal Blood glucose and A1c tests ...Then she said - "...well you might have a shed load of vitamin deficiencies...? :-0 I am checking the latter out.

I am 61, previouly long distance walker, once a week 5K runner type - good diet - wine on Friday - Sunday only - Jan Dry and Sept Dry.

But I have some symptoms that do map to diabetes. They began two years ago:

1st - 2021 - dual tennis elbows / ache at night / great fatigue ALL the time - dont play tennis golf or hockey or use keyboard.
2nd - 2021- burning hands / tingling hands / worse at night
3rd - 2022 - dual trigger finger - helped by steriods injection
4th - 2022 - Tinnitus - continous high pitched
5th - 2022 - Tingling/Numb Toes and soles of feet
6th - 2022 - Nerve damage in both feet - Dec 2022

No thirst, no weight gain or weight loss, no vision changes, no huge appetite. But I do pee for England like 20 times a day and have 3 cousins who are Type 2.

So, my question is...are there any other Diabetes tests i could take to rule this cause out..?

All help and advice very appreciated. As I am worried sick. My GP is still nice but has become ..Dr Dolittle.. and is suggesting I " live with it " but i see things getting worse not better. Thanks good people.

Welcome to the forum
You don't appear to have any of the classic symptoms except the peeing. If you are male have you had your prostate checked.
The HbA1C is the standard test for diabetes and from the results you have had are in the very normal range.
Have you had any other blood tests to check for anaemia as that can give erroneous HbA1C results. B12 deficiency can give some of the symptoms you describe.
Did your neurologist suggest anything like medication, to alleviate your discomfort.

Welcome to the forum @KimKim2023

Sorry to hear you are having a confusing time with your health, and the symptoms you are experiencing.

Good to hear you have been seen by a neurophysiologist, but a bit disappointing that your GP has been less helpful of late.

I wonder if @mikeyB might have some pointers, having had some experience of helping others with emerging neuro symptoms in the past?

The HbA1c results you have had do seem to suggest that whatever symptoms you are experiencing are not likely to be connected to elevated glucose levels. HbA1c reflects glucose concentration in the blood stream for the preceding 3-4 months, so it’s a fairly solid indication that your BG levels have been within a healthy range and unlikely to cause nerve damage during that time.

There are various things that can affect Hba1c results.
There are other ways to be testing, can you ask your neurophysiologist to request your GP refers you for further investigation?
Or buy a tester yourself, test two hours after eating, and record what your spot BG is.
That will give a good indication, as most Hba1c variables don't affect that test.

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂 I don't have any classic symptoms neither, but definitely diabetic. I never want to drink, can go all day without a p, only thing I do get is blurry eyes if I pig out. I was pre-diabetic for a couple of years and ignored it, proper stupid. To be in denial is normal I think.
