Hello to all from wet Sheffy.

Found out last week, been struggling for a while with serious Pancreatic/Gall Bladder probs. Waiting for surgery.
Been put on Metformin 500, I know nothing about this stuff and would appreciate any advice etc.
Hope I can make a helpful contribution in here.

Thanks

Hi Bill, welcome to the forum 🙂 Also nice to welcome someone from Sheffield, lived there for 20 years and my favourite city! 🙂

Sorry to hear about the problems and the prospect of surgery, I hope that the op comes through soon and offers you relief 🙂

Metformin is a standard 'first choice' treatment for Type 2 diabetes, and usually is started on the lowest dose of 500, and may be increased up to 2,000 eventually. It can cause gastric upsets/wind at first, but symptoms usually settle down as your body becomes accustomed to it (this is why they start you on a low dose initially). If you really don't get on with the standard type, there is a 'slow-release' version which you may tolerate better, so do ask for that if necessary.

I'd suggest starting by reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter as they will give you a good grounding in what it is all about and how to deal with it. Also, Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker is a really excellent book to help guide you through the early months, and highly recommended by many of our members 🙂

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered daft, so if it bothers you or confuses you, please let us know and we'll be happy to help 🙂

Cheers Northern person.

Sheffy is a fine city, it has everything, sport, good music scene, c**p traffic flow, Meadowhall, is very diverse and everyone is friendly.
