Hello I have not been able to post as my computer died and I have had to save up to get a new one. Hope everyone is doing well. Things have been mixed for me. Have the most appalling upper respiratory tract virus which has played havoc with my BGs over the last three weeks. Also have heard that I have a cataract coming in my left eye so may need an op :( Optician says that this may have been influenced by having diabetes. Bit worried about an op but can't do anything about it.

Hi @happydog, good to have you back with us! 🙂 Sorry to hear about the computer, and also about the virus:( Unfortunately, I think cataracts are more common when you have diabetes, even if you are well-controlled :( I hope it isn't affecting your sight too much at the moment.

Hope you are getting over that virus and your levels settle down soon {{{HUGS}}}

Good to see you again Happydog. Sorry about the virus.

Hello @happydog, lovely to see you posting again 🙂

Don't be worrying about having cataracts removed Happydog! Again like another thread I've just posted on - not the most pleasant of experiences but never painful, just extremely weird LOL. I had one done a few years ago and the other done about 6 or 7 weeks ago.

Immediately after the first one, still in theatre the ophthalmologist enquired what I now thought about it. Mmmm I replied, to be polite it was probably the most hateful experience of my life, bearing in mind you don't know what to expect really, can't see what's happening and the chap doing it keeps telling you to look at this horrible light that's far too bright! - but if you now ask me whether it will stop me coming back to get the other one done - no it absolutely won't! - and burst out laughing. And it didn't!

Both perfick and resulted in lesser prescriptions both times. (cos I need to wear glasses anyway and NHS replacement lenses are plain, not prescription lenses.)

Please don't worry about the cataract op, my dad had both his done last year, and said it was not painful at all, just a little bit scratchy, for him the worst bit was they soaked him when washing the eye, he could not believe within a couple of days how much better his vision was.

Sorry to hear about the chest virus, I always find they play havoc with my levels as well. I hope you are feeling better now.

I know two people who have had cataracts done and it has really made things better for them. One was diabetic, the other not.

Thank you for the reassurance about the cataract. Until I got diabetes I had never had much to do with doctors hospitals etc, also I hate needles and am not a good patient. Your words have helped. Guess it will be months before it actually happens. 🙂

Just thought, my cousin aged 86 was having one done last week (non diabetic). I recall chatting to my optometrist about them as my neighbour had had one done and my friend has one, we think due to steroids. I said my neighbour can see better than me now and she was 85 at the time. He said it did not surprise him if she had had cataracts done as it really improves the eyesight. He told me most people get them with age anyway.

Good to have you back Happy dog. Do try to take care of yourself and ease back up to full speed after your virus.
