Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
We've just moved from Surrey to west Gloucestershire. I suppose I'm T1.5 LADA as I was in my late 50s when first diagnosed although the clinic in Surrey had me as T1. I'm keen to learn what support is available in this area, but I'll put a question related to this in the General section.
I have often referred to the Diabetes UK website but never joined this forum. I will be interested to see how it works.

Hello and welcome to the forum @t1robin 🙂 Gloucestershire makes me think of Prince Charles and Laurie Lee. I liked that story of those people going up to Laurie Lee sat on a bench and asking him Can you tell us where Laurie Lee is buried? :D

My consultant has me down as Type 1, even though I was diagnosed at the age of 51. He said he doesn’t find LADA a terribly helpful label, you’re either auto immune (Type 1 ) or you’re some other type, irrespective of how fast your diabetes develops (and I’ve seen anecdotal evidence from this forum that older adults develop it more slowly than children and younger adults)

Welcome to the forum @t1robin , from another late starter (aged 53 at diagnosis)

As @Robin says we are likely to have developed our ‘T1’ more slowly, so the beta cells will not have been destroyed so quickly, but once diagnosed the treatment is much the same, although some find that their honeymoon period goes on for longer.

If you would like to tell us more about your management it can help people to adapt their responses to suit. Are you in Multiple Daily Injections or a pump?
What insulin’s do you use? Have been able to access a Libre?

Keep in touch and do ask any questions that you have.

Thanks SB2015, I'll add this to the message footer later, but for now, Diagnosed 2000, treated with tablets for about 6 months but they never really got the blood glucose under control. So now I'm on Novorapid bolus (average 19 units per day over the 3 meals) and Levemir long acting (7 units morning and evening).

I do use a Libre and am releaved that the new GP practice has continued to approve the prescriptions. Previously I was cared for by Professor Russell-Jones at the Cedar Centre who was intrigued by my condition. I'm slim and take a relatively low dose of insulin which points to T1, however I tested negative for antibodies. He was unable to explain how I came to be diabetic. I think he wanted to see how things developed.
