Hello everyone ! I have joined this site for support as my HBa1C is totally out of control and looking to share ideas and tips to improve this. I’m Type 2 and during the course of a very difficult and challenging 2020, where apart from lockdown I was too busy caring for my elderly mum who has cancer that I totally neglectEd myself. My HBa1C has shot up from 53 to 79 and BP through the roof. So it’s time to sort myself out and I hope to get there with some support from this forum. Thanks everyone.

Hello Glasgow (lovely city) from Wales (deeply rural).
Sorry to hear about your Mum, that must be very hard for you. Thank goodness you have belatedly realised that you need to care for yourself. Everybody on here will offer you kindness and support I am sure.
Have you been given any advice on how to get the BP and the HbA1c back down by your Dr? A lot of people without your care load have gained weight and lost fitness during this wretched pandemic. Have you any plans to lose weight and increase exercise or is your Dr advising that you take any medications?
Tell us about yourself, feel free to vent on bad days, celebrate better ones and know that we are all sympathetic to your difficulties. Nobody will give you medical advice but there are many old hands on here who can point you in the right direction to look for answers.

Hello and welcome to the forum @Sanah60 🙂

Hi Sanah60, welcome to the forum.

So sorry to hear about your mum. The most straight forward way to get things under control is to look at your diet. Reducing carbs and sugar can really help to improve your numbers so its worth taking a look at what an average day looks like for you and see if there are any modifications to be made.

We've got lots of info on the site so do take a look around and let us know if you have any questions.

Hello @Sanah60 welcome to this great forum
well done on deciding to get both the diabetes & blood pressure unde control,

Sounds like you’ve had a difficult year (like any of us)
I wouldn’t say 79 is “through the roof“
I actually scored over 100 on my HbA1c at the beginning of 2020
and I’m sure I don’t get the gold medal with that score either..

Having a elderly and unwell mother can certainly put the screws on caring for yourself, I know
(been there done that - never got the T-shirt)
unfortunately we lost my Mum last June (obviously still in the first lock down)
but that finally gave me the swift kick up the arse I needed to start caring for my own health.

have they changed your meds ?

Hi everyone I hope you are all well. I really appreciate your responses and was really interested to read how you are all doing. A lot of positivity there ! I thought rather than reply individually I would reply at the one time. I am new so hope that’s how it works!

I only discovered I had a BP of 220/117 when I went to see my practice nurse as I was getting concerned about my weight and blood sugars. That was a massive shock and the very next day I hauled out my trainers and started a daily walk routine and cutting back on the unhealthy foods. That was 3 weeks go and I have been averaging 10000 steps per day. A few days later received HBa1C result of 79. Again a shock but not unexpected.

Two weeks go I experienced vision loss in my left eye. To cut a long story short they ruled out TIA and said it was vitreous detachment. Continued walking/healthy eating and sadly last Friday (just 6 days later) the vision loss happened again. I was kept in hospital this time and am still here. I had an MRI scan this morning which ruled out TIA but showed up a possible blood clot in vein that leads to the eye. I then had. CT scan earlier this evening, result will probably be tomorrow. I am really worried if it is confirmed as a clot.

I am now beating myself up that I should have done what I am doing now health wise 6 months ago and I wouldn’t have got to this stage. I fear it is too little / too late.

I was already on ramipril and bisoprolol and was prescribed amlodipine when it was discovered that my BP was so high. I am on metformin 2000 mg/day.

I am reaching out to see if anyone can offer me any advice/comfort/reassurance please? I am driving myself mad alone in hospital staring at 4 walls.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Goodybags I am so sorry to hear of your sad loss

Thanks @Sanah60 for your kind words, yes it’s certainly been a tough year for loads of us.

I’m sure your hospital will get to the cause of your latest condition,
nobody wants to be in hospital, but sounds like your in safe hands

I’m sure someone on here will see your post and can give appropriate advice

Hello @Sanah60
It is good that you have joined the forum, and I hope that you find some help and support here when you are having such a difficult time.
It is very hard to deal with, but it is good that your health issues have been identified and that you are getting some medical help.
Please try not to beat yourself up though. None of it is your fault, there are many things that cause health problems, and the main thing is to get help with them, which you are doing.
Hopefully you will be able to return to your walking and working out how to control your glucose levels soon.
There is plenty of help here on this, if you have a browse around, particularly in the help for Newbies section.
When the time is right for you, there are many ideas of what to try.

Hi @Sanah60 Sorry to here you are struggling However, your exercise will help once the hospital has sorted you out. I was massively overweight and have hypertension so I know the problem, and the medication well. Healthy eating and some exercise will help enormously

Sorry to hear about the tough time you have been having :(

Well done on the positive changes you have been making and the increases to your daily activity.

Did you get the results from your scan on Friday? Hope it offered some reassurance. 🙂

thanks everyone for the great support. I got my scan results and it’s bad news. I’ve had a TIA due to blocked carotid artery left side of neck which apparently has been narrowing for a number of years and which I was completely unaware of. The high BP, weight gain and uncontrolled sugar levels has not helped. I“m still in hospital awaiting a 2nd MRI tomorrow. I’m devastated that I didn’t take care of myself but I have to stay positive am determined to reverse things as much as possible now.

Just wanted to say well done to all of you, your weight loss stories have been inspiring and given me the determination to do this as I know from reading your experiences it can be done. I don’t have the strength to reply to each and everyone of you just now but wanted to say thanks for taking the time to reply.

onwards & upwards

Oh no! I’m really sorry to hear this. :(

Hope you are being well looked after, and that they can suggest some procedure or other that can help with your blocked artery.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
