Relationship to Diabetes

Hello all, another newbie here.

I had a phone consult with my GP today following a blood test advised by my dentist due to unexpected gum disease. GP’s exact words were ‘you are well diabetic’ - all she left me with is an appointment with the diabetic nurse next week and that I will likely need medication - no mention of what. I was so shocked I didn’t ask what my blood test results were.

I am 16 months alcohol free (ironically a lifestyle choice) and have been recovering from a big ankle operation last Feb which has affected my mobility.

I have started swimming and walking again, I know weight is an issue - I replaced wine with pudding and chocolate! Not wise. I have started low carb and 8/16 fasting this week.

I am a coffee shop fan and am pondering whether I need to give up my daily cappuccino. I am guessing I do.

I really want to turn this around and not have to resort to medication if I can but I am worried it’s too late.

That’s me today in a nutshell. Feeling a tad overwhelmed and not knowing what food advice to trust as it all feels very conflicting right now.

Hello Flamingo, what a rotten way to be told you have diabetes, so sorry to hear this. Having said that welcome to our forum and you are amongst people who know just how you feel and how shocked a lot of us were when told we were diabetic. I’m amazed you were not told your blood result as that is very important. Nevertheless the simple rule really is LOW CARBS, so bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc and of course the usual sugary things. I think the coffee should be ok as long as you don’t pile sugar in it. I won’t give you too much info as you will be overwhelmed enough as it is I’m sure but know that we are all here if you have any questions at all and you will get used to your change. You have obviously done extremely well if you have given up alcohol and are starting to exercise, that will hold you in good stead. Others will offer lots of advice and try to read as much as you can of the posts and you will see how things work, it’s surprising how you can change things round and very good luck to you.

A plain cappuccino (without syrups, etc.) is likely to be 10-15g of carbohydrates. (Presuming it's a coffee shop chain you can look up the nutrition information on their website.)

For someone trying to go low-carb that's significant, but even then likely doable. If it's something you enjoy, mention it when you get to meet a dietician and see what they suggest.

Welcome @Flamingo74, I honestly despair at how diagnosis is given, absolutely no thought for the impact or after affects when you go home without any reassurance or understanding 😡
We all get how it feels so don’t think you are alone, what’s more we can all help you get this under control! Best advice is to first grab yourself that plain cappuccino and get comfy then read as much as you can here, all you need to know will be found on these pages. Ask as many questions as you like so you can make your mind up how best to approach things. Like you, I love my coffee but tend to stick to plain black now 😛

That’s really quite appalling.
