Hello 🙂 all, hope you are all good today? I must say that there is so much excellent advice on this forum - thank you!

I was diagnosed with T2 four years ago, got put on metformin and have stupidly ignored the fact that I have diabetes and just thought that the meds would manage it. My diet has been full of carbs, I’ve ignored all advice. Not sure why, it’s like I have been in denial.

I have suffered with gastro issues which left me not been able to digest so many foods, mainly healthy foods, including lots of fruit, salads, nuts, so I resorted to living on junk food (I’ve been vegetarian since I was 10 years old 🙄).
I recently really cut back on alcohol and I found that it was the cause of the stomach issue, so I can now eat everything which makes life easier.

So now is the time to tackle this diabetes and get myself off the meds. I had a bit of an epiphany when listening to a podcast and hearing - I don’t want to be responsible for my own death - and it’s really resonated with me. It’s the time for me to make a difference before it’s too late, no more excuses!

With the support that is offered on here, I finally have a glimmer of hope that I can do this 😉 any advice on a low carb/ketogenic veggie diet most welcome xx

your not the only one having been put on medication that then ignored the need to eat a healthy diet

you will find some great advice and information on here, it’s quite a friendly place

I registered on the forum quite a few years ago, however only recently, took action in seeking advice of others and been posting on here, I was also kind of in denial of my diabetes, just took the meds & carried on eating all the c**p.

well done for making the decision to make a difference.

Well done for now facing up to your diabetes and deciding to get things under better control.
This is a manageable condition and you have taken the first step.
 
Hi @Louise27 & welcome! I'm not a vegetarian but you might find the Carbs & Cals book or app helpful for carbs/100g and pictures of different portion sizes. Having a plan & a fridge stocked with the right stuff certainly helps reduce the likelihood of eating junk food. I can only have small portions of treats around as they seem to quickly gravitate to my mouth... 😱
 
I think trying to reduce carbs if vegetarian must be quite challenging. We ate quite a few vegetarian things like bean burgers and veg burgers but when I looked at the carbs they were just too high. A lot of vegetarian meals seem to be very pasta/rice/potato based but I'm sure you will find a number of alternatives which you can base your meals on. Eggs and cheese are good and fish if you eat it (my daughter does and she is vegetarian otherwise).

Good to have you here, and glad you have found reading the forum helpful so far.

Amazing that you’ve had a real moment of clarity about your self-management of your diabetes, and I really hope that the support of the forum will be a real help for you over the coming weeks and months.

Remember, it’s best to make changes to your menu and activity levels gradually - partly because they need to be sustainable long term, but also because very rapid and sudden changes to blood glucose levels are harder on the fine blood vessels, and changing things more gently will give your body time to adapt.

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ solution that everyone must follow - so it‘s a question of finding your own ideal self-management toolkit and dietary approach. And don’t stress about trying to get things sorted all at once - this is a marathon not a sprint 🙂
