Hi, I’m mum to a just turned 9 year old who was diagnosed with type 1 a month ago. After a fairly easy start we’ve now hit some bumps as the novelty has worn off and she’s realised this is for life.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I think that's a reaction we all go through and struggle with. How are you doing? It's a lot to take on board and Relentless daily management, but you've come to the right pkpla for understanding and support 🙂

It’s been a trip! My husband was away for the 10 days before diagnosis, home for a week (during which she was diagnosed) then away for 2 weeks. In some ways it was easier when it was just me as we got into a sort of rhythm with it all but we home educate and she can’t currently go to friend’s for long play dates or overnight which was our usual pattern so I’ve not had much of a break. I have fibromyalgia and am used to managing a chronic condition so that side of it I understand it’s just dialled up to 11 with T1D. It feels like ai’m back to having a younger child in terms of need for oversight again and that’s exhausting.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It is a lot to get used to at the start, but it does get easier, and just becomes part of a new ‘normal’ life, but it sounds like you are used to that already with your fibromyalgia. It is understandable that your daughter is finding that the novelty has worn off.

A book that I have found very useful, and I know others on here have too is Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It is regularly updated and the explanations are very clear. It includes info about everything, and I still use it as a reference. It is worth getting the latest edition with references to the most recent technology available.

The overnight stays and days out will be possible once things have settled. You would need to explain the management to those she is staying with, but that is for when you are both ready.

If you have any specific questions do ask on here. no questions are considered silly on here, and we ‘get it’.
Just ask.
