Hi, my name is Sharon. After a very serious illness my husband has developed Type 1 diabetes. Previously he was a very fit, healthy man so this has been quite a shock and I am having to learn fast. We are supposed to be going on holiday to South Africa later in the year and I am looking for a good quality travel pack for his insulin pens, etc. Can anyone recommend one please? Also, he is currently keeping his pens in a frostproof box in the kitchen fridge. Can anyone recommend a mini-fridge which is suitable for this use? Thanks everyone in advance for any help you can give.

Hi Sharon, sorry I can’t help at all with your query but I’m sure there will be others who can. Just wanted to say hello, welcome and you will get lots of help and support from everyone

Pens, vials and cartridges do OK abroad in a Frio pack - BUT you shouldn't keep insulin completely unfridged for longer than 30 days else it will go off. How long are you going for?

These are the Frio wallets Jenny mentioned - https://friouk.com/product-category/medical/?product_count=36 - I'd recommend getting a large or extra large one if your husband will need more than a couple of insulin pens and/or there are any other meds you need to keep cool.

The length of time insulin keeps out of the fridge does vary - most last 30 days, but one of mine lasts 60 days unfridged - so you'll need to check the instructions on the individual insulin to find out how long your husband's lasts if you're going to be there for longer than a month. Also some insulins are fine up to 30 degrees c and others only up to 25. But the Frio will keep them under 25 so long as you regularly refresh it by soaking it in cold water.
