Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello.

My name is Rebecca, and I am newly dignosed with Type 2. Went to the doctors on Wednesday evening with what I thought was a kidney infection, and by Thursday afternoon I had been tested, diagnosed, given my tablets, and met with a nurse from the local Diabetes clinic to get my equipment. To say I am pretty dazed is an understatement. It hasn't really sunk in yet and still feels pretty strange.

To be honest, the most daunting thing is the amount of information I will need to learn over the next few weeks and months. I came across the forum really quickly though and I hope that there's a fountain of knowledge in here that will help me get through.

Hello @Beck S , welcome to this friendly forum, though I am sorry you've needed to find us.

First I would like to reassure you. Diabetes is a condition that with the right info, is a condition that can be well managed !!!
It may supprise you to know that many here have ended up fitter and healthier than ever because they've taken there diabetes in hand.

Your gp practice worked real fast 🙂 all credit to them. I also noted you said the nurse gave you a kit , I assume a glucose meter ? If so you are very very lucky indeed.

One thing about T2 is unlike most T1 though there is a lot to learn, we don't have to learn it all by yesterday. As you read around here you will see that we don't have the initiation by fire that some of our people who have T1 have had.

First take a deep breath. You will get there.
Ask as many questions as you need to.
I have one for you, what numbers were you given for your blood test results (Hb1ac)

Hi Rebecca, glad you found us and a warm welcome.

Hi Bek. I was diagnosed on Friday. I'm in complete shock. This group has already been amazing. I didn't even know I had been tested for it & im pretty much symptomless.

Welcome Rebbeca from a fellow T2

Welcome to the forum Rebecca. Any questions just fire away and someone will be along to offer advice wherever we can 🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂

This devastating news might take a while to sink in. It did with me at any rate.

Thanks everyone for your messages.

It was definitely a shock, but I'm plodding along for now. The speed at which it all happened was fast, but my GP and the staff at the hospital were all brilliant. Seems like a different experience to you Tracey! But it definitely feels like it hasn't sunk in yet. Mostly just getting used to my blood sugar monitor and where to do it (was at Hyde Park yesterday so I did my test in the St. John's Ambulance Van!). I have named my lancet thing Stabby.

I haven't had my HBa1c results back yet as they weren't ready by the end of Thursday when I was with the nurse, but my blood sugar readings were in the 18s. I have clinic on Wednesday where I'll get that result and am seeing a dietician soon.

Look forward to chatting with you all 🙂

I finally got my Hba1c back yesterday and it was 107. The doctor didn't want to start me on insulin however, I was on the lowest level of tablets, so she had upped my Metformin from one in the morning and evening to 2 to see how that works in conjunction with diet. I met with a specialist nurse and we had a chat, and I feel much clearer about everything, particularly food-wise. She's referring me for an appointment with the dietitian as well, so I can get more advice on how to eat and try to lose weight as well. Apart from the chats with the nurses in clinic, they don't want to see me for another six months.

Been a long week, but I feel much better about what I'm doing going forward now.
