Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I’m Trudy and I’m 56 years old. I’m type 2 diabetes but I have 2 other autoimmune conditions ~ I’m Coeliac & Hypothyroid. I also have asthma; bronchiectasis,
I haven’t seen a dietitian for my diabetes or as a newly diagnosed coeliac in Jan 2022.
To make matters worse I’m also a vegetarian.
I had to have a minor surgery on 28th April but they refused to give me the general anaesthetic (as was planned) as my 2 previous HBA1c blood tests had risen from 53 to 75. I had to get the surgery done by spinal.
The hospital also kept me in overnight as they were worried about my sugar levels. My finger prick tests are all in the region of 19.9 even first thing in the morning.
I am extremely worried as I already have changes in my eyes, my feet haven’t been checked for about 2 years either,
My GP has changed my meds from Aligliptin to Gliclazide 40 mg twice a day.
am constantly thirsty, dry mouthed, tired and irritable. I think I am permanently hyperglycaemic and I am so worried.
Any advice welcome and I’m so sorry about my long first post but my GP isn’t interested and I don’t have a diabetic nurse.

Thank you, Trudy

Welcome @Trudy21 How long have you had Type 2? You mention auto-immune conditions - is there any possibility you’re Type 1, which is also auto-immune?

19.9 is certainly high and will be making you feel very rough. What’s your daily diet like - ie what would a day’s meals look like for you?

Welcome to the forum @Trudy21

Those very high BGs must be making you feel pretty yukky :(

Autoimmune conditions can kinda clump together, so it could well be worth getting checked out to confirm your diagnosis, just in case there is an autoimmune element. Many people (including some healthcare professionals) are under the impression that T1 is only a disease which arrives in childhood, when actually at lease as many people each year are diagnosed as adults - with no upper age limit!

Do you have any family history of T2? It sounds like things have been developing pretty swiftly for you - which is another feature often seen with T1. Have you seen any unintentional weight loss?

With high BGs like you are experiencing, it might be worth considering picking up some urine ketone strips at your local pharmacy. You can pick up a pot of 50 for about a fiver, and while they aren’t as accurate or immediate as blood ketone strips, they would provide you with a means of checking that you weren’t developing ketones - which can get to be pretty serious very quickly when associated with high BG.

Good luck, and let us know how things go 🙂
