Hi all

I wonder if you could shed some light on diet for me please? I'm trying to support my fiancé who is T2 but I seem to be struggling.... I've been reading up and looking online, there is so much conflicting advice....I'm really confused with the whole carb thing

We've been following slimming world together (as I need to shift a few pounds before our wedding next year) but this seems to fly in the face of the advice around carbs as potatoes, rice and pasta are classed as free foods!

I do most of the cooking (by choice) so this last week I've been cutting out rice, potatoes and pasta and substituting with cabbage instead of spaghetti, cauliflower instead of rice etc. - is that this right thing to do??

Any advice would be great thank you 🙂

Hi @Jox , welcome to the forum. I have no idea about slimming world but a diet based on potatoes, rice and pasta is not good for us with diabetes as it turns to glucose very quickly, which our body has trouble dealing with. Most of us on here find that reducing carbohydrates works well for us.and many report losing weight is very easy.
I am afraid their is a lot of misinformation out there, I include the nhs, healthy eating plate or whatever it’s called now in this.

We usually have no problems with protein and this may well supprise you, good fats.

Why not have a look at these threads on here.

Hi @Jox
I was on slimming world when I was diagnosed with a bg of 22! I was struggling to lose weight despite sticking to plan, having switched to low carb 6 months ago and doing exactly what you have worked out, cut out rice, pasta, potatoes and only eat Burgen bread, I’ve dropped over 3 stone and my bg is steadily between 5 - 6 :D
Ironically, my daughter who was also on slimming world and struggled to lose, switched to low carb as both her dad and me being type 2 shook her up a bit, she is now in her 3rd week and has lost 5lb o_O I would never go back to eating carbs now, I don’t miss the bloating, the acid indigestion or feeling sluggish after a meal.

The last thing slimming clubs want is for people to lose all their weight and stop coming or paying - low carb foods are the ones to go for, but they would never tell you that.

I am still using a spiraliser (I know that they seem to have gone out of fashion) to make courgette and also carrot spirals which I happily have in place of spaghetti. I have also found black bean spaghetti (Explore range of foods) which are much lower in carbs. This is great as I do like a good bolognaise.

Like others for sandwiches I use Bergen bread which half the carbs of our home made.

We also simply reduced our portions by using smaller plates. I know it sounds silly but we are used to it now, whereas at the start ipthey looked so tiny.

Whatever you eat it is the carbs that cause a rise in glucose, and you have to find out what will work for you. We have set a target for each of our meals, which was half what we used to eat, and have made that work for us.

It is certainly difficult to understand why slimming world class potatoes and pasta as free food!!(unless I put my cynical hat on or is that reality hat and see that they make a lot of money from their special diets, and regular returners!!)

Ohh, black bean spaghetti - never heard of that. Will give it a try, usual retail outlets?

Out of fashion? Just bought one. Damn it, I'm so unfashionable. *Irons flared levis*

I laughed like hell when 'boot cut' jeans appeared in the shops! Nothing new under the sun really.

I have found it in some supermarkets at intervals otherwise it has had to be the local health food shop. They even had some free samples.

Thank you so much everyone 🙂 I'm really grateful for all of the advice and will definitely be buying some Burgen on my way home tonight!! :D

I found black bean spaghetti and this spaghetti in our local Holland & Barrett. It's rather nice 🙂
