Relationship to Diabetes
Hi All

This is the first time I've used a forum since my daughter was diagnosed type 1 two years ago.

She is nearly 13 and has always just got on with it. Couldn't be more proud of her.

But I need help... She multi doses and has has had two reactions to both rapid acting insulins roughly a year apart. Two different reactions which mean she has had to change insulin.

Has anyone else experienced similar? How many fast acting insulins are about? The Dr indicated there was two she could go on and asked the nurse to chose one. One was chosen. Does this mean there's only one more compatible one to try? What if these two others cause reactions what treatment options are there then?

I'm a bit of a headless chicken at the moment!

Any help or experience greatly appreciated

Xxxxxxxx

Hi ClipClop89, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear that your daughter is having reactions to the insulin - which ones has she tried? I'm aware of novorapid, apidra and humalog, and also the animal insulin hypurin. These appear to be the most commonly used. What sort of reaction is she getting? We have had members here in the past who have experienced a reaction but have managed to find a solution. You might like to contact the Diabetes UK Helpline service - they should be able to give you a full list, they can be contacted at:

Welcome to the forum, ClipClop (great name!)

I can't help as I'm type 2 and not on insulin, but others will be along in a moment.

Thank you ever so much for the replies. So far (I think I was wrong about them both being fast acting) which makes me feel better. But the levimir is the first she's reacted to which caused really nasty burning irritation on the skin around sites. Novorapid that's just caused lipo atrophy? Tummy all over and both legs. Really unsightly she's at a funny age too re her appearance so she's upset. I've read about people having reactions to one but wanted to know if it's normal to react to more than one. But I'm worrying she will keep having these reactions and run out of options. As a headless chicken parent does! Lol thank you for the helpline contact I think I need just to have my mind put at rest.

Thanks for the warm welcome xxxxxxxx

Interesting that you mention both levemir and novorapid, as they are made by the same company (Novo-Nordisk). I wonder if it could be something in the 'transport' liquid they use (i.e. the liquid that gets injected along with the insulin) that she has a sensitivity to? Lantus works very differently to levemir and is made by a different company so might be better 🙂

Northerner you might be right there. She's now on lantus without issue. Has been for a year since levimir no problem. They prescribed her humalog on Wednesday. So far so good but Im keeping a very close eye on her!

I hope it goes well! 🙂 Please let us know if there is anything else we might be able to help with 🙂

All 'modern' insulins are a cocktail of different chemicals really - even the Wockhardt animal insulins and the old fashioned animal ones some of us were on as a matter of course years ago, also have chemicals since they have to be purified and altered so as to have a regular constituency and consistency every time - so it is entirely possible to become allergic to them.

There's another 'fast acting' one that's less common than the obvious choices of Humalog and Novorapid - but still quite widely used - Apidra.

We all react slightly differently to any of them for the simple reason that we are ALL definitely different from each other.

It's also quite possible that in a few years time if she tried one, other or both of those she's had to stop using so far - her sensitivity to whatever she reacted to may have disappeared - like kids 'grow out' of hay-fever and stuff?
