Hello all - I am a 73 year old male who was first diagnosed in 1966 (I even have the Gerald Nabarro medal to prove it!). My wife and I moved to France to live a few years ago and we enjoy our life here. I take insulin 4 times per day and have generally kept well although I did recently have to have stents inserted in 2 arteries. Nil desperandum, and we are shortly off with the caravan to the south of France which is usually very pleasant in late summer/early autumn. I do not know if my experience of living with diabetes in the UK and France will be of interest or use to anyone else, but in any case it is always good to learn how others cope with the problems that arise. Best wishes to everyone on this site : DUK is a terrific resource for us all. Thank you to all the staff.

Welcome to the forum Hilvern. How wonderful to live in France. I'm envious. :D

Thank you, Kate. We always wanted to live in France after many years of camping and caravan holidays here. I also worked in Paris as a student. There is lots to like about France, even if, like most countries it has its own problems of one kind or another. The health service is good and the people are unfailingly welcoming and helpful and we have had no regrets about making the move - which was a major adventure in its own right. Also a great place for you to visit on holiday!

Hello Ljc

The NHS where we lived (Scotland) was, in my opinion, outstanding in terms of diabetic care. We had a one-stop facility at the local hospital which covered all aspects on the one visit. The diabetic centre also worked closely with the GP, so care and cover were quite comprehensive. I find the French still have some ground to make up in these respects as aspects of care are more fragmented and the patient really does have to keep track of everything and be pro-active in organising appointments etc. There is much bureaucracy and paperwork involved at all stages, so it is, in general, less automatic than I was used to. Having said that, our GP is outstanding, hospitals are pretty good all round and pharmacists helpful. Must rush, so sorry to cut off here. Have a good day.

Welcome to the forum. 39 days and I will jumping on the train across to France, well Disneyland Paris to be exact. I have some friends who live in the South of France, they run a horse ranch there.

Welcome & bienvenue, Hilvern.

Welcome Hilvern. Everyone is very helpful here. Glad you are enjoying life in France and yes we would be interested in your input. I too think this site is brilliant.

Hi Hilvern, welcome to the forum 🙂 Congratulations on your Nabarro medal, you give us all inspiration and hope 🙂
