Type 1 since 1982 (when aged 23), on a Medtronic 640G pump for several years, using actrapid. Additional conditions with heart, BP, cholesterol all being medicated. HBA1C currently 7.5%.

Given the current state of the pandemic, reducing prevalence of the virus, a BMI of 22, what degree of social distancing / isolation would now be recommended for me?

Does anyone know what proportion of well controlled Type 1's need hospitaliastion if the get Coronavirus?

I don't have concrete figures about the proportion of T1s who need hospitalisation - I am not sure that those data are being counted.

The NHSE study of mortality which showed the increased risk of death in T1. However it’s important to recognise that the absolute number of T1s in that study isnt huge. The average of those who died with T1 and covid 19 was over 70, and the risk of death to T1s in their 40s was roughly the same as the general population I think. There were no T1 deaths under 20 in the study data.

So yes, as a person with T1 you are at increased risk. and if you get covid, and it develops into a severe case, then diabetes does add extra risk into the equation - so do take precautions, keep washing your hands and keep to social distancing, avoid crowded places and all of those obvious simple steps, but try not to panic. If you are worried that you may need to fully isolate perhaps have a chat with your GP, but I don’t think that is recommended for you accordind to the guidelines.

Hi Bryan (diagnosed 10 years after me and 1 year older at the time!) the other important thing that we've learned along the way is that with Covid 19 - ketones get going at far lower BG levels ie in single figures so even if your meter isn't nudging you to test them - DO! If you've got anything that could be, might be I mean, not generally.

Welcome Bryan
ha ha probably same as best to do and not to do as before pandemic 🙂

Found out today our grandson had to nip to the out of hours doc at the weekend, cos he had a sore throat ...... Doc - oh dear, we should consider Covid. GS - my only symptoms are a raging sore throat, a very high temperature and bright red, septic tonsils - so I'm inclined to think it may be tonsillitis myself. Doc - I'll write you a prescription for a course of ABs.

LOL - he's a lot better by now. His mama said trust him to get out of both our first day back working at the pub!
