Relationship to Diabetes

Hi,

My name is Debbie, diagnosed in Nov 2016 - doing well so far in losing weight, taking responsibility for exercise and diet. (Desmond course was brilliant)

I've recently found my, normal solid, fingernails have become soft and peel off at the top - could this be anything to do with diabetes?

Regards,
Debbie

Hi and welcome, I have always had weak splitting nails long before I was diagnosed, but it could be due to your diagnosis.

Usually more due to lack of hydration than health, and not a thing that's normally associated with diabetes as far as i know - cos I'm the same so I've scoured the internet for connections myself LOL However of course - if it's worrying you - get it checked out.

Bear in mind that by the time your nail flakes at the top, it'll be due to whatever caused it when it was starting to grow at the bottom, about 12-14 weeks ago. So it could be that high glucose levels before diagnosis were dehydrating you, and the result is only now showing in your nails.

My nails are atrocious. They peel, they break, and have deep vertical ridges The only way I can get them looking nice is to use a keratin treatment on them every day. But I cannot put nail varnish on. It does not soak through the varnish and if not put on every day my nails break. Nothing else works. Mine is due to my thyroid condition.

I have black lines on some of mine. Never found out what causes that.

Ditto. Even though my thyroid levels are pretty good due to the medication, my nails are horrid.

Lilian - would you like to give us a clue about the brand ? I honestly don't mind about polish, getting them all to stay long enough to stay all looking reasonable at the same time occasionally, would be a bonus!

Thanks I might give that a try.

I've always been blessed with strong nails that grow quickly but about a year ago I had an issue with my nails on my little fingers (both hands) growing with a weak split down the middle of them and as my nails are so hard if I let them get too long the pressure on them would make them break on this weakness. However since lowering my Blood Glucose I haven't had this issue so maybe hydration is an issue as I had raging thirst prior to diagnosis last November (reason I went to GP for test).

My toe nails are another issue though. Strong hard nails do not make for pleasant toe nail cutting! I have to soak my feet to soften them enough that the nail scissors can cope!
