Hi. Is Heinz chicken soup, and Heinz mushroom soup ok for a lunch? These are my 2 favourites. Also what about the other Heinz flavours. Also is there any other tinned soup which is better than these ones. New to the diabetic world, so just trying to learn, and not wanting to make my own or anything like that.

How are you looking to deal with your T2?
Diet, meds or a combination of the two?

I am taking 1 gliclazide a day, and I have to take 1 metformin each day for 1 week, then increase to 2 a day for a week, then increase to 3 a day after that. I am just wanting to exercise more and eat more healthily to deal with this.

I cut back a lot on the carbs and reduced my eating window to about 6 hours a day having 2 meals to put my T2 into remission without using meds after very bad experiences with metformin.
After 3 weeks of hell I threw the pills away.

What were your symptoms with metformin? I am just on my 6th day of taking 1 in morning. Not felt any side effects yet.

Hello,

Looking at the nutritional value of the chicken soup. https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui...ecial-offers/heinz-cream-of-chicken-soup-400g
It looks like 13.6g of carbs per can?

The mushroom. https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui...cial-offers/heinz-cream-of-mushroom-soup-400g
Looks like 21.4gs.

It all depends on how your metabolism copes with the amount of carbohydrate.
Do you have a blood glucos meter?

Yeah I was given a meter to use, she told me to do a reading before breakfast, lunch, and dinner and record them. My readings today were: 9.4 | 11.4 | 7.3.

That’s great you have one. Maybe try 2 hours after the chicken soup to find out the effect of 13.6g in relation to the test before the meal?

No problem I will try that, thanks. Say for example it was 11.4 before lunch, and I had a soup, what would be a good/bad reading after 2 hours. If it was around the same count would that be good? I've not spoken to a diabetic nurse or anything yet, was pretty much just given the meds and the machine.

I find tinned soups pretty awful and generally make my own as it is very easy to throw a few veg into a pan with some water and a stock cube, cook and blitz. Add pepper and a dollop of cream.
Favourites are broccoli and stilton, butternut squash and red pepper, courgette and brie, leek, celery and pea.

11.4 before you eat is pretty high but if you keep the increase from your meals to no more than 2-3mmol/l then your levels should start to come down.
If you have a high level before lunch you might want to look at what you are having for breakfast as if that is high carb as in cereals and toast then having something lower carb for breakfast may help. Try testing before your breakfast and 2 hours after so you can see if your breakfast is tolerated.

You are probably one of the lucky ones - at least so far you are. I had the most painful time with it, just taking one a day rocket powered incontinence was the result. Luckily I never needed it in the first place and eating low carb was all it took to return to normal numbers.
I make soup with meat and veges in a pressure cooker, then the trusty Bamix blender and the chopping blade will blitz just about anything. I throw in some beetroot or tomato as the original colour of the result can be a bit off putting for the sensitive without a bit of reddening up.

Tied to the loo almost unable to leave the house..

They do sound tasty and healthy, I am not much of a cook, but I will give them a try and lookup some recipes online for diabetic friendly soup.

Sounds terrible, well nothing like that yet for me, I feel quite energetic and my toilet routine has not changed yet. Maybe when I increase the amount something will happen, hopefully not.

Tinned soup is always such a handy standby, when one has no food, or no time to prepare, or just feel nice and lazy etc etc.

From what I see, though, they all come with a carb penalty....sigh.

However, one 'upside' (!) these days is that if I treat myself to Heinz tomato soup I can pour in extra cream and not feel guilty any longer!!!

That is simply a low-carbohydrate soup. Chicken & leek is good, so is chicken, leek & mushroom. Leek & potato isn't. Nor is using flour as a thickener.

And for the red pepper / butternut squash soup, I'd roast them in the oven rather than boil them, with quartered onions and some wedges of lemon.

I know that Heinz soups are higher in sugars, but not sure on the cards. As an alternative, I have been using Morrisons own Classic brand of soups, as they are both lower in fat and sugars, and the carbs are not too high, compared to many other foods. I also find Morrisons soups just as good as Heinz.

Thanks to the people and messages on here, as long as you are not eating the same things on a constant basis, you will lower your sugars, it's about variation and seeing where you can use alternatives that are low carb as well as low sugar, something as simple as celery with a small dollop of philly garlic and herb cheese is such a nice alternative, just don't over do it with the Philly soft cheese, even though it's lower in carbs and sugars.

I know this depends on each persons own Doctors Surgery. Do you find that you don't get much information at all from the diabetic nurses, unless you ask the questions, other than a bit of basic advice and a BG monitor ! I am not trying to call the diabetic nurses, but you would think they would offer you more information. We seem to be told what the problem is and are then left alone to find out what the hell to do.

I am so glad for this site as I learned a lot of things in such a short time from everyone else.

Remember it is the carbs that is the important number not the sugars as all carbs convert to glucose. It will be the specific soup and not which brand that will be the difference.
Having been making soup myself I'm afraid I find bought soups pretty horrible.
