Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Is anyone else struggling in this weather? I keep getting high readings due to the heat but due to gaatroperisis I can't over fill my stomach with liquid so struggling drink enough water has anyone got any tips in how to stop this?

My daughter tend to go high. You can use a higher ratio of insulin if you need to correct. Keeping cool by sucking ice may help a little. Some people go the other way and go low with the heat so it seems to be very individual what the responses are. Even sitting in front of a fan for most of the day her levels still seem to be up so it’s not as simple as keeping the body cool but it will help a little.

My daughter is low all the time at the moment and I’m having to reduce all her doses. Probably next week I’ll have to put them all back up again, that's Diabetes for you 😡 Your profile says you are type 1, do you know how to adjust your doses to cope in situations like this? You need more insulin, unfortunately we can’t tell you how much to increase it by because everyone is different, are your medical team helpful with things like that?

Also running high; usually I stay around what I wake up at, mid 5s, but I’m stuck in the 8-9s atm even eating the same and drinking lots of water.

Doesn't the whole 'trick' of dealing with gastroparesis revolve around 'little and often' rather than 3 meals a day or large amounts of liquid at any one time?

I find the opposite in the heat. My insulin sensitivity increases, so I’ve been cranking down basals and chugging lucozade!

Just checked mine after feeling like I was going to pass out. 3.4!!! Ate some chocolate. Not working fast enough. Hubby has run to the shop to get jelly babies and lucozade. Never known it to be so low. Horrible!!!

I dunno how low I dropped this afternoon, just know I did so having just made a cuppa anyway, ate a couple of biscuits and soon felt better. A couple of hours later before 'dinner' I was still only 4.4 so that sort of confirmed that I'd been lower as the biccies were 5g each and I had two. Fruit shortcake, my all time favourites. Payback for doing housework ......

Warm weather usually means really stable levels between 5 and 6 for me for much of the day, but only if there is a nice breeze. However the last couple of days I have had a number of 'mild' yet annoying hypos. 35 degrees here for the past 2 days, touching 30 degrees in the house. Yesterday I was stuck around 4 all day, despite lots of liquid and the occasional snack when I was feeling low (around 4.5 or lower). Reduced my Basal a touch this morning and will reduce Bolus when carb counting throughout the day. Fingers crossed the thunderstorms forecast for later bring a bit of relief! Perhaps I'll move to Barbados - the 30 degrees, blue sky and a constant sea breeze would keep things feeling comfortable.

Lowered basal and bolus and chugging jelly babies for me too! Went for a walk yesterday, had a couple of jelly babies after half an hour, had quiche and salad and a cappuccino in a cafe half way round, didn’t bolus at all for it, and never went above the sixes.

Hot weather tends to push my scores high but I can then be overly-sensitive to corrections or exercise. Libre is mighty handy for keeping track of what's going on.

My levels are horrendously high despite my best efforts. I have done a lot of correction doses and changed ratios but not much impact. I used to go hypo in hot weather but the last two years its been highs.

Same here, I woke up at 6.3, usually I’m in the mid to low 5’s, and it’s all been downhill from then. Was 9.0 by lunchtime, and 11.3 mid afternoon. Now stuck in the 12s and thoroughly fed up.

Another day, another hypo for me! Three of them during the day yesterday and didn't budge much above 5. Even a dose of 4 jelly babies only shifted me from 3.2 to 5. I used to love hot weather, but it's currently causing me strife.

Hi I have been type 1 for 30 years and have never struggled so much in the heat with going low as I have the past few days. Cant seem to get myself over 5. Have eaten jelly babies foloowed by lunch ham sandwich and then a peach and hour later I was 2.6. I was getting quite worried but then realised it must be the heat. Not nice. Bren

Glad its not just me. I just get my ratios sorted so i'm tootling along nicely then this. I upped my basal last night. Will see how that pans out. I don't know about anyone else but theres only so much fluid i can drink

I’m going up again, one slice of wholemeal @ 15g carbs, 4 units insulin and I’m at 8.2. Skipped lunch and just had some cheese.

@Brendevon - you'd probably be better off dropping your basal a tiddly bit - are you on MDI or pumping? If MDI, what basal insulin?

I'm always high due to pigging out so I can't tell. I shall hose after tea so I can freeze my feet a bit, they are puddings.

BG was 3.1 when I got up. Apple juice, Jelly Babies and flap jacks. Taking the morning off.
