The health benefits of olives -- and associated natural products such as olive oil -- have long been recognized and touted by proponents of the Mediterranean diet.

However, little was previously known about what specific compounds and biochemical interactions in the fruit contribute to its medical and nutritional benefits such as weight loss and prevention of type 2 diabetes.

You can have 20 olives a day on Atkins. I hate the taste though, horrid. I've tried to acquire a taste, but nope, they're too yuck. I like olive oil though, drizzled on lettuce. 🙂

Gotta be careful with the Olive Oil.... The Extra Virgin oil is the thing to use & watch out for it being adulterated with other oils.

Not just me then. :D

When I was young, I always thought that the taste of olives would grow on me as I got older just like tonic in my gin did instead of eg orange or bitter lemon. However now knocking 70, I concluded quite some time ago now, and despite holidays in Greece Spain and other Mediterranean lands, that it wouldn't. And still hasn't. It's still vile !

Pete's a very useful olive dustbin to have at my side at times when things are garnished with them and cunningly hide themselves on my plate under eg lettuce leaves or pizza topping ingredients !

I'm the same TW - always knew the OH would come in useful🙂
Good to have you back btw. Hope you had a great holiday.

I quite like olives too but they are an acquired taste I agree.

Oh Jenny is back...welcome from your summer adventures 😛

Away with you, philistines all, pah! Olives are the fruit of the gods, and like Robin, I lurrrve them :D <slurp!> I have them probably most days, in salads, in mince, even to perk up the mushrooms & tomatoes at breakfast...

Oh for the days of my yoof, when with a Cypriot friend, we'd enjoy red wine, hunks of bread, cheese, and olives (though to be honest only the hunks of crusty bread have gone now :()

@Ditto Did you have tried different types of olives and preparation?
Because olives under olive oil have a different taste from olives under vinegar and salt.
Black olives are different from green ones, and there are also cultivars Kalamata is quite different in taste from Cerignola or Taggiasca

Totally agree..... There are some great olives out there, one just has to try them.... BTW I prefer the ones packed in oil.

Had a lovely holiday, though too hot a lot of the time (in the high 30s) though.

So now we're back - and I'm flippin frozen LOL but at least we have CH here whereas we don't in the van unless we're driving somewhere snd then only the cab. We'd just left the M25 to get on the M1 on our return (after a delay on Eurotunnel) on Weds evening when everything ground to a halt - a multi vehicle pile up somewhere about a mile or two up the actual M1 - shedloads of Emergency service vehicles went passing by on the hard shoulder, blues and twos going (Fire Ambulance and Police then eventually after another 90 mins a breakdown truck)

Traffic Alerts had told us that they'd closed both the access roads from the M25 but nothing else forthcoming for ages till they said police were now clearing the backlog. Really? no sign of any movement yet - after about another half hour we started moving and eventually the 4 lanes from both access slips got as far as the actual M1 and gradually we all filtered onto it. We couldn't believe the number of stupid people changing lanes every few yards then expecting to change back again and wow they might have actually gained 3 yards but raised a lot of other people's BPs in the process.

You do have to wonder where some of them bought their driving licences from, don't you?

I love olives and olive oil. Home bargains had some stuffed olive snack packs a while ago. The ones with lemon were delicious.

A few years ago I was working in Cyprus & got involved with olive picking at the weekend. Dumppy sacks full of olives & pure fresh olive oil out of the press at the olive plant. All the local pickers had there toasters, lemon & bread. Dipped in the oil is brilliant & I regularly have it for breaky 😉
