ok my first HbA1c was 77, not even sure if good or not, I think on high side, but it included a period of illness and hospital admission with minor surgery & treatment of an abscess with IV antibios and steroids , during this my BG was up to 26.9, since then has steadily come down to mostly under 7, lately under 6
My problem is I have no idea what HbA1c of 77 means really ..is it awful or ?

Hi Martin - 77 is in the realm of slightly high, however being unwell for a prolonged period of time would almost certainly cause you to have increased bg levels. Add to this that you were unaware of your diabetes and therefore were not medicating, it is quite likely that your first HbA1c would be quite high.
So, if you are now getting consistent BG readings of under 6 or 7, they are great readings, well within the target range outlined by NICE so that's really positive. When will your next HbA1c be?
Your levels day-to-day are brilliant, so I would imagine that you may have a lower HbA1c next time 🙂

Was 3 months ahead so maybe 2 months and a half now ..nothing works that quickly in NHS, but quicker up here rather than big cities

48 or 6.5 is the level at which a diabetes diagnosis is made Martin just to give you a sense of where yours started. Sounds like you’re doing really well now so good luck 🙂

Ok so 77 is not too bad, I doubt next one will be anywhere near, I'm dieting losing weight a bit, and with meds BG levels are ok..

Hi Martin

An HbA1c result of 77 converts to an average finger prick blood test of 12.0 mmol/L. Given that you've been unwell with very high readings in the 20's that's not surprising. If your readings remain in the 5's, 6's and 7's then your next Hba1c result will be lower. You sound like you're doing really well and going in the right direction 🙂

Also inflammation increases our BG, as do steroids! Hence it's hardly surprising a body that had started on the journey to diabetes admitted defeat, is it?

You're doing pretty much OK so far, it is very early days after all!

HbA1c:
30 - 41 is "normal";
42 - 47 is called prediabetic.
Once you've hit 48 or higher you're diabetic (even if you get it lower you're still diabetic).
People on here have been diagnosed with HbA1c from the 50s to around 100.

You've not been diagnosed long, and with the illness, operation and everything your BG will have been at that time.
