Hi everyone

Got my HbA1c score today - it was 7.0 (last one was 7.7 up on the previous 7.4). I was delighted and looked it. Grumpy old nurse said "It could be better" talk about bursting my bubble. I think 7.0 is good control (diet and exercise). I would welcome your views - am I being too happy without reason?

7 is good - whats that in new money? We're now supposed to get them in percentage and mmols... but I guess its only on blood taken after June 1st not the results given since.

There is a conversion calculator on DUKs web site if anyone is interested.

Well done Caera!

OMG! Clearly this nurse does not have diabetes or an understanding of how hard it is to get your HbA1c down!

If that was my HbA1c, Id be throwing a party! well done!

Must admit I was a little shocked by her attitude and she is the diabetic nurse in the practice. I always believe that positive encouragement helps a lot - I got no encouragement at all. Pity. Ah well! At least I can turn to all the good folk here and we can support each other.

cracking score!!!!!! well done :D

hi all what is this HbA1c????? I am geting my blood done in july and was wondering is this it, no one tells me my score ( never think to ask , I just like to go see gp and get out quick as I can)

I was dow seeing my gp today about a laxcitive and she said its hard to give diabetics one as the interact with the metaform, so gave me Senna tablet, she said this is good.

Ceara - well done and do enjoy your delight. Must have involved much hard work on your part with the diet and exercise programme. Had you agreed a target beforehand? I ask simply as the nurse might have assumed (ass-u-me is so right) that your target was the norm for type 2's of <6.5% and that may have informed her comment. Reminded me 'tho of my massive sense of achievement at my last HbA1c when it hit 6.5% - didn't allow that glow to be dented by the nurse saying that she would like it to a be a "bit better" given my early eye changes. I knew how hard I'd worked to get that far

Miker, if you look at the top of the page, you'll see a link on the tabs to HbA1c and you'll find an explanation of what it is all about there

Brilliant numbers keep up the good work 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Dear Miker,

The HbA1c (Haemoglobin A1c) test measures how much glucose (blood sugar) has become permanently bonded to haemoglobin in your red blood cells. The higher your blood sugar has been over an extended period of time, the more likely it is that glucose will have become permanently bonded to your haemoglobin. Since the life of a red blood cell is 2 to 3 months, this test gives a measure of your control over the same period.

Dear Ceara,

Congratulations, you should be happy, your A1cs are moving in the right direction! I think your DSN needs to go on a course to learn all about inter-personal skills. You should look at your results as being a motivation for keeping up the fight against this terrible affliction that that we all share. Normal people (non diabetics) have A1cs in the range 4% to 5% and it is now recognised that the closer you can get to this the less is the likelyhood of future complications. DUK says we should shoot for 6.5%, but I prefer to keep mine below 6%.

Warmest Regards Dodger

She was probably thinking that the target is 6.5% and you didn't hit that. What she failed to realise is that you have made great progess since last time and that was an improvement on the previous one. So well done to you 🙂

Thanks everyone. If she had even given me a target to reach - but she did not. I was left to read up on what was acceptable etc. I was simplydelighted that I was going the right way.

Thanks again everyone.

Yes well done Ceara! In such a short space of time too! I hope Alex's next one is as good as yours!:D Bev

Keep up the good work - but dont forget to have a treat now and again! x

Cracking HbA1c. 🙂

I've still not worked out how to convert between HbA1c % and mmols. I had a appointment with my surgery's DSN and she's not worked it out either.

There is a conversion calculator on DUKs web site if anyone is interested.
Remember seeing that. I'd rather know how to convert an HbA1c % to mmol though so I can be independent. 🙂

That sounds like my diabetic nurse! - All I ever get is "could do better", "mmm that's unusual" :(

You are right to feel pleased. When my HbA1c came down from 9+ to 7.5 when first diagnosed, there was a comment on the result from my GP saying, could be lower. When the DSN at the hospital saw the result he said it was excellent and I'd done really well and should feel pleased!

Any improvement with your hba1c is excellent! its extremely hard, to dicipline yourself with food, live your life and worry about weighting food and counting carbs...

i've been working for the past 3 months to get mine lower and the nurse phone me today and told me i've got it down to 6.9%!! i'm still in shock cant believe it thats my hba1c level lol - wow!! xx
