One does wonder if his knowledge of the medications is also poor. Do you carb count? What sort of doses of insulin are you on? It might make a little sense to add the glimipiride if you were only on levemir, but as you are on novorapid already I don't really see how it can be better than simply increasing your meal-time insulin. Can you get a second opinion? Or even better, since you are on insulin, can you ask to be referred to a consultant-led clinic so that you can see proper experts. Given your HbA1c, I would have thought that the GP isn't really helping you to achieve good levels and it is time to go above his head. That advice about hypos is just atrocious coming from someone who should have at least a rudimentary idea of how to treat one, and the timescales in which it needs to be done (i.e. at first sign of hypo!).
