Had some bloods this week at GP. Just had phone call from surgery to say white blood cell count low and hba1c is 42. I feel absolutely devastated as when I was on the prevention programme my readings went from 43 to 33, then 35, then 37, then back to 35. GP is going to repeat tests on Monday and I had already booked to see GP on Wednesday anyway. He seems more concerned about the white cell count. I had a D and V virus a couple of weeks ago and keep feeling I am getting a cold, sneezing and sore throats but nothing really serious happening. The hba1c has really upset up. I have just tested myself and got 5.8. I ate my tea about 2 1/2 hrs ago. Not sure what is causing the problem as every time I have done a test with my machine they have been OK. I know they are not hba1c but they have still been fine.

HbA1c at 42 is well inside the non-diabetic range, why the heck are you bothered by it ?

As trophywench has said 42 is below the diabetic level and a reading of 5.8 after eating isn't anything to worry about, I wish I had the occasional reading of 5.8 after eating!

Thank you for the support and help. I suppose it was a shock that it has gone up again. I have been testing myself from time and time and have not found anything sinister. Sorry to come across as a whinging, whining, wimp. I know I have nowhere near the problems many on here have to contend with.

A friend of mine has been diabetic for some years and he has taken a reading of 26 and then 19 over the last couple of days. He has had a nasty chest infection and now a urine infection which may be affecting it. I have suggested he speaks to his GP as that is a worrying level in my view. He has quite a few medical problems and I feel very sorry for him. He never complains.

You're right about your friend - concurrent illness always affects BG and his body clearly needs a bit more help at least at the moment if not forever. Get the BG down and your rate of recovery automatically speeds up so you shake 'other stuff' off a lot better.

My bg went up to 20 following a chest infection and urine infection. I went to the GP who said if it gets that high again go to A & E. Please encourage your friend to talk to GP, or at he very least ring 111 if they get high numbers again.

I will call him tomorrow and see how things are. I am sure his wife will make sure he goes to GP too. I am concerned because he only has one kidney (nothing to do with diabetes) as it is and if these bloods remain high for too long they may affect the remaining one although I hope not.

He told me yesterday he has a couple of Weetabix for breakfast and I suggested it may be best to have something egg based as Weetabix may be too much for his system. He said he is also going to stop eating his two biscuits in a morning and his scone in the afternoon. I did say I thought that was not a good idea at all, not every day. A treat, yes, but not every day. He has quite a lot of medical problems and I feel really sorry for him. Poor guy has had to be taken off Metformin and put on Gliclazide. The Metformin is causing him diarrhoea very severely. I suggested the slow release as I have heard about that here. He has tried that too to no avail. I am wondering if he is going to end up insulin dependant.

You are a good friend looking out for him like this, but agree if he is type 2 weetabix, a couple of biscuits and a scone are probably too much for his levels in one day.
