HbA1c and NAFLD

@BobbleHat. Your profile says:

- July 24: Hba1c 52/Cholesterol 6.1/NAFLD
- December 24: Hba1c 39/Cholesterol 6.0/ No NAFLD

That's a great result. May I enquire how it came about that you had 'before' and 'after' NAFLD results? AFAIK most T2Ds are not offered liver scans.

I was but for hemochromatosis not T2D.

I was never offered a liver scan (which I now know means my diagnosis of NAFLD was not a secure diagnosis, more of a this the 'likely reason for your abnormal liver function blood result').

I had full well woman bloods every year because I'm on HRT. The diagnosis of NAFLD actually preceded my T2 diagnosis. For the two years before my hba1c went up I was pre-diabetic at 42, with indications of stage 1 NAFLD (i.e my bloods weren't excessively abnormal and I had no symptoms).

My diagnosis of T2 came from my annual bloods too - again, no symptoms or anything.

I had my hba1c rechecked 4 months after my T2 diagnosis and I asked them to re-do my liver function tests at the same time (they weren't going to bother until my annual review in May). For the first time in 3 and half years, all my liver enzymes were in normal range.

I don't know if that's any help.

Yes it is. Thank you.

Professor Roy Taylor once commented, 'Show me a Type 2 Diabetic, and I will show you a fatty liver'.

Your liver function tests show you had got rid of the excess fat in your liver and pancreas. According to Roy Taylor this fat had built up over the years. The result was a disruption your 'endocrinology' (enzymes), insulin resistance and presumably dysregulation of your glucose and lipids culminating in T2D.

My ferritin level halved when my HbA1c came down to 39. That was before the venesections to treat my hemochromatosis began. Even so the hepatologist took full credit that 50% reduction!
