Hay fever

Sort of, I think - I certainly feel better than I did before taking it, but still a bit sniffy and eyes a bit sore - could be cumulative from the past few days I suppose. Hard to tell if they've made me drowsy as I didn't sleep particularly well last night and have been up since 5:30 🙄

KookyCat, that certainly looks a much more reasonable price and might be worth considering if the pills don't work 🙂 I don't like taking pills either, and put off taking the one today after being scared off by the whole anaphylaxis side-effect warning 😱

The good thing is that this doesn't appear to have affected my BG levels like a cold usually would.

The irony of anaphylaxis from an anti-histamine would just be too much 😱

Most antihistamines take about three weeks to build up I was told, my go to pills if needed are acrivastin (Benadryl, but not the once a day ones) they do work quickly, you can take three a day but they knock me out for the first few days.

Just realised I wasn't really bothered by hayfever last year, but then my immune system was otherwise engaged attacking my pancreas clearly far too busy to be bothered by a bit of rogue pollen!

I think my immune system has just got lazy - it no longer bothers attacking my pancreas, and now it doesn't bother defending me from hayfever! 🙄

Mine is this one
http://www.international.boots.com/en/Boots-Allergy-Relief-Device-Batteries-Included-_1207448/

That one on Amazon is very pricey Northerner, I actually got my Boots one for a tenner when they had an offer on so worth keeping eyes open if it persists. I don't like pills either Bloden, never have, plus a lot of hayfever meds make me drowsy even when they're supposed to be non-drowsy.

That's more like it! I get ALL the side effects - nausea, dizziness, drowsiness...so antihistamines are out of the question. My tablets melt on the tongue, so I guess they're something different.🙂

My son has fexofenadine tablets (on prescription, not available over the counter). The over-the-counter meds didn't touch his hayfever symptoms at all. He also has beconase nasal spray (again prescribed, because it's not licensed to be sold to under 18's). The last few days have been bad for hayfever sufferers!

Eating locally produced honey is supposed to help (the bees have gathered local pollen, so it supposedly builds up a tolerance) - no idea if it actually works but of course my son is only too happy to have honey on his toast every morning (with insulin of course!). Also, he sleeps better if the cat isn't allowed on his bed (the cat will have pollen on his coat and on any shed fur) - not sure if you have pets though?

...not sure if you have pets though?

IIRC Alan doesn't have pets of his own, but he gets visited by two cats from next door (Bonnie and Macavity). 🙂

You're correct Robert, I think they spend more time in my garden than the neighbour's 🙂 Do mice count? One popped its head round from behind the fireplace recently 😱

Aw was it a field mouse, lovely little things, my old cat Daisy used to bring them for me, alive I hasten to add. A tip, don't ty to pick one up whilst wearing a long sleeved nightdress, you'll find that when it scampers up your arm there's no choice but to whip the nightdress off, much to the amusement of passers by because the curtains are open 😱

Too late! 😱 😉

I must say, ever since I read Kookys post, I have been trying to banish from my mind the image of Northerner in a long sleeved nightdress!

Better than the babydoll, surely? 😱 😉

Well, the pills appear to be working, symptoms have all but disappeared despite pollen count being very high 🙂 Thanks for you help all 🙂

I'm glad that the tablets are working🙂

I have very strange hay fever some years I'm hardly affected , then other years I get it really bad , this year it is bad I think it's to do with the different pollens and in answer to your question Alan yes it is possible to develop hay fever in later life , it's all to do with our lifestyles and ever changing environment x

I do remember something similar last year, but nowhere near as bad as this year - last year I think I just shrugged it off as a cold! What I like about this place is that it's not just questions about diabetes that get answered, you can ask about practically anything! 🙂
