Hi everyone, i hope you are all well.
I need some help and advice please. Terrible blood sugars today, 11am my sugars were 30.9 😡😱
I have done my insulin and my blood is coming back down, but i am craving things something terrible now. I really really want some chocolate.
Can someone tell me if this is normal to feel like this or not, and should i have some chocolate to stop the cravings and take more insulin or do i do something else.
Please help me before i go and buy the biggest bar of chocolate i can find.
Thanks everyone x

Hi Karen Have you tested for ketones?

OK you need to ring your DSN 30.9 Is quite a high number. You need a meter that will test for ketones too as for the chocolate....NO

I dont have a DSN at the moment, i have only just been refered to my new hospital (as i changed my address, 6 months ago) they sent me an appointment last week for November 21st.
Just checked it again and it is 9.7, thank god. But i am worried incase it drops again x:confused:

Can you ring your new hospital then?

i phoned them before and they wont tell me anything until i have had my appointment. So im very confused x

Karen. If your bloods climb like that again and you can't speak to someone at the clinic, you should take yourself to either the nearest A&E or a walk in clinic. Or call NHS whatever it is now for advice. Numbers that high can be dangerous and you should have help dealing with them. You could also call your surgery, tell them what's up and ask for some ketone testing strips on emergency prescription.

As for the cravings they do seem to go with high blood sugars and hopefully will wear off now you're on the way down again.

If you are fairly solvent, you can get pee testing strips for ketones from the pharmacy, about a fiver-ish. Called 'Ketostix' would you believe! - instructions in the packet.

The meters that test your actual blood for ketones are far better of course but I have to say, I rarely have BG that high so it's never been worth me having one or any strips (which incidentally cost the NHS approx. 50p EACH) . And I may use one ot two Ketostix every 2 or 3 years, and next time I need em they are out of date.

The reason why you crave c**p when your BG is so high is because you have all that glucose rushing round your bloodstream but your cells can't get hold of it, as clearly your body doesn't have enough insulin in it to get rid of it. Next step is full blown DKA and you are in an ambulance blue-lighting to A&E.

So - how the hell did you get that high in the first place?

How long since you did a basal test? I should get that done pdq if I was you.
