Does anyone else feel like having a rant everytime they come across someone who doesn't understand what they go through everyday?? i usually start by trying to educate them, but on some occasions it doesn't work. have you ever had this?? what did you do?? i know i had a huge rant at them and eventually they got the message i was still a "normal" guy and i wasn't someone they needed to say sorry to all the time.

just wondering if you all did the same as me 😎

The only thing different to a none diabetic is injections and a finger poke. I can not honestly see what the problem is. Personally I don't feel as if I "go through" anything
Perhaps I will feel differently once I have had diabetes for a bit longer.

its good you feel like that sue, but i have really bad swings in bg levels and cant seem to stop them. if i increase my insulin with the high levels i go hypo within the hour if i decrease my insulin with lower levels i go hyper within the hour. i also have to test my bloods ever hour as my consultant wants to get a big picture of what is happening and also i have to have a diary of what i eat. i hope to have a pump soon as both my dn and consultant think this may help to control the levels better. so when i tell someone why im doing my monitoring i always get oh im so sorry for you, does it hurt? etc and i feel like screaming at them.

Hi Mike, I was thinking exactly what Sue said. I dont feel like im going through anything on a daily basis, only if I have a big hypo and feel like **** afterwards, or if I have infections or other problems because of diabetes (which i have done recently). But i'm sorry that it affects you so badly on a daily basis. I hope you get your pump soon and that it helps alot 🙂

I sometimes have a rant because I am a person in my own right, and I am a mum a wife, a daughter a sister, an employee, a reading thinking, loving inteligent, breathing human being.

I am NOT a diabetic, I'm over sweet. If I say I'm diabetic people overlook everything else I am and either wrap me in cotton wool or treat me like a complete moron...

Mike have you looked into using the natural insulin's? Porcine or Bovine?
A lot of people find they get a lot better control using them.
Also are you correctly carb counting?
Yes I have had a few ups and downs as a diabetic. But no I do not not feel like screaming at anyone else. To solve the questions/sympathy just avoid testing in view of other people.
Pumps are no picnic either you will have a lot of work with a pump. IE keeping records and testing a lot.

hisue,

my consultant thinks that switching to natural wont help and i know that the pump wont be easy either, just hope it will help to give me a more stable sugar level. why dont you think we should inject or test infront of other people?? i am not ashamed of being diabetic and i will test where and when i need to as it is the only way i can kepp myself in even this state of control. i do know how to carb count and i have been on the course for it and when i go to see my dn we spend some time going back over it and also looking at what i eat too. so im not sure what else to try to be honest lol. thanks for the advice still sue 🙂

I think we as diabetics must be patient with people who know little or nothing about diabetes. Firstly, it does nothing for the cause if people think diabetics rant all the time. Secondly and probably more importantly people are ignorant to the disease. I knew nothing about diabetes bef ore I had it except that it was caused through people eating too much sugar AND that people with diabetes didn't live very long. Both I now know to be completely wrong.

While I don't feel my diabetes is something i 'go through' it does change your life and that is something no one can deny. Your diet changes, you have eye tests every year (two in fact a regular one and a screening), you have medication to remember, you have medicals to attend, you have hypo's to watch for and treat, so yes it does change your life but the key thing is not to let it rule your life.

Hi Mike, How does your consultant know that using natural insulin's wont help? 🙂 The symptoms you describe are the most common with an allergic reaction to a type of insulin. I had exactly the same symptons and a change of insulin cured it as it has many others.
I didn't say you shouldn't inject or test in front of other people. I was pointing out if you didn't do it then you wont get the comments = problem solved. But saying that also please do be aware that some people have needle phobias, so please do have some respect for other peoples feelings too.
best wishes
Sue

I think we're all entitled to a rant every now and then, be it direct to certain people or to ourselves/on places like this. Certainly none of us should be 'ruled' by our condition and I think most of us will be working towards us controlling the condition, not the other way around. However none of us (as far as I'm aware!) is perfect and I think we all to varying degrees have times when it can be too much...

You are not wrong when you say 'it' can get too much Aymes. And I am not just talking about diabetes!

I honestly think that if anyone reacts badly to someone injecting a life saving medicine they should be slapped a bit...

It's not like any of us are going to say "hey, take a look at this", take out our insulin pens ninja stylie and inject right in front of them. Everyone just lifts up their top a bit and does it as quickly as possible. Or does it through their clothes. If anyone notices they should just look away.

Ive never noticed another diabetic injecting before. I would like it if I did though cos' it would make me feel better :D

Sounds more like Mike's basal is running out early or just at the wrong level.

Have you checked on your basal Mike? I've not read back much (too busy atm) so forgive me if I have missed a lot of backstory.

Well said Katie!!

if i increase any of my insulins i get hypos. i had to plead with my old consultant to get him to believe me over this and then when i moved to the new center and the new consultant things were quite bad. i was having a minimum of 3 hypos a day and if i had sugar to cover this i would swing the other way. it isnt so bad now as im down to 1-2 hypos a day, but i just want this under control now. my new consultant is very good and he wants to sort this out quick to.
