Please feel free to move this thread if i have posted it in the wrong place.

Has anyone had a gastroscopy (camera down the throat)
I am due to have one on monday, i am undecided as to have the throat spray or slight sedation.
At the moment the sedation will be my option as i am a whimp when it comes to precedures on myself.
I worrie so much that i panic and make myself worse and find it hard to relax....
I have no problem with my diabetes BG levels are very good.
Has anyone got any advice on this for me please.

Hi Sweet my other half had this done and i wont lie found it very uncomfy,he says if your squemish or anything like that best thing is to get knocked out,he went for the spray but wished he had gone for sedation as that would of give him at least 5-10 minutes to come around.He was in the room no more then 10 minutes but it felt like longer

you swallow a tube the size of one of your fingers,then they put it down your throat you will wretch as its a natural reaction so when they finally get it in they have to twist to see around your stomach,so i would definelty take the sedation option.

Sorry if that all makes it worst but i just typed as he explained it hun

Yes i have had the throat, nose and ...hmm hmmm the other end all done.

For the throat one i went private and was given both throat spray and sedative.
Ask for both - you won't feel a thing then.

I have a real problem with gagging but had no problem at all on the day.

Its all over so quick - you will wonder why you worried about it.🙂

Will defo have the sedation, i can cope with most things as a carer, but when it comes to myself or family it's totally different.

Hiya,
I had one done a few years back.
I just had the throat spray, not to sure I would like to repeat it though. So as long as you have someone to look after you and drive you home afterwards have the sedation. You wont be allowed to drive for 24 hours after the sedation.

Have had a couple of these, if you have the sedation you cant drive yourself, you would have to arrange for someone to pick you up. They are very strict about it too, they don't let you organise mini-cab, it is supposed to be someone who can be with you for a while at home too just to be sure you are ok... so telephone and check on the rules or you might find you turn up for the appointment and then can't go ahead.

The sedation is quite mild and you may still be aware of a slight gagging but then drift off until it is over, the second time I was completely asleep when they put it down so perhaps the degree of sedation varies.
 
I can't give any information, but can correct the spelling from gastoscopy to gastroscopy, which will help you to search online if you want. Hope it all goes well.

I once had a gastroscopy from both ends (not at once of course -- I think they did it from the lower end first). I had to fast for three days beforehand, and purge myself with medication which they supplied, but neither was as bad as I expected. I also was kept in hospital overnight afterwards.
 
I've also had the tube both up and down, you don't need to take the nasty clear out medication if just having the gastroscopy thankfully 🙂. I'm not at all squeamish and usually tolerate things really well so chose the have the throat spray and have to admit it is probably the worst thing I have had done. It doesn't last long but was not a nice experience at all so I would never have it done with the throat spray again. If you are already nervous I would definitely go for the sedation. Hope it goes well for you.
 
I've had a camera down my throat, they tried with just the spray first but I just wouldn't relax my thoat (can't swallow a paracetamol so a camrea had noooo chance) they had to knock me out completely in the end as even under mild sedation my throat was too tense. Only took about 1/2 hour to come around afterwards but I was kept in a bed for another hour to make sure I was OK

That was to find what was wrong with my stomache a few years ago when I was in constant pain. I had/have severe gastric reflux and my lunch from the day before (hadn't been alowed to eat for over 24hour) was still sitting there only partially digested. I know how to control the reflux now (half a glass of full fat milk, semi-skimmed or fully skimmed have no effect, slowly sipped over ten to fifteen minutes) pitty my digestion still plays up though :(
 
I've had cameras both ways and opted for sedation, I have a fairly ghoulish mindset, but the idea of watching that was a step to far for me. Had a bit of a sore throat afterwards, but it soon wore off.

I've had three done and chose to be sedated as I hate things being put down my throat.

You'll probably find your throat is a bit sore after the precedure though.
 
I have had it twice, first time the spray did not work and it was the worst thing ever! 2nd time the spray did work but still very uncomfortable and scarey. A nurse let me squeeze her hand and that helped - sounds daft but if you are going on your own then take a squeeze ball or similar as the sensation is horrible.

If you can have someone with you who will also stay to look after you, go for the sedation. I did not really have that option.

I am booked for a nose camera!! Had that done before and that also is uncomfortable but the throat one is the worst. For the other end, the sedative knocked me out so ended up being the easiest!!!
