Hi Guys, being New Years Day we are nursing a young man who has his first hangover. He has slept and thrown up for most of the day and his bgs have been okay so far and I am not worried about him too much. Pretty contrite and accepting of help but hasn't eaten anything all day so no insulin since about 9 when he had a bacon buttie (which didn't stay down for long).
What I am really after is any advice regarding T1 and hangovers really. I can help with the hangover, just not sure what else I need to do.....
Thanks and Happy New Year to you all!!

I don't really do anything different to what I did before I was diagnosed for a hangover, just keep hydrated and take paracetamols 🙂 If anything, my blood sugar levels are usually better than usual, probably because of the trauma suffered by my liver! Hope he is feeling better tomorrow - has he said 'never again' yet? 🙂

I can't help with the hangover, but I once had to endure a nasty stomach bug for several days. I was unable to keep food down and was able to sip small amounts of apple juice or water with frequent monitoring of blood glucose levels. When necessary I would inject fast-acting insulin and I slightly reduced my long-acting insulin which I injected at the scheduled time.

My boy appears to have a cast iron constitution, so no advice I'm afraid. If I am to believe the amount he claims to have drank last night, he shouldn't still be alive I don't think, but he has managed to eat normally all day and has just gone off out again!!

I guess if his levels are ok, then don't really worry too much. My lad had an episode in hospital a few months ago when he not only drank alcohol but cans of Red Bull and full fat Coke and his bg levels went off the top of his meter. Very scary. Vomiting violently, barely conscious, so we ended up dialling 999. If his levels go really high and he throws of ketones then I would say you are in trouble, but if his levels are ok then just go with the flow and deal with it how you would if it were you yourself.

Fun this bit, with teenagers, isn't it! NOT!!

Thanks for the advice everyone. He recovered like you do when you are young - no problems with bgs but hopefully he felt awful enough to curb any further binges for a while! The lesson here kids is don't mix cider, vodka and sambucca...

Is it age or diabetes that makes hangovers so much worse for me these days? I avoid alcohol most of the time because the first glass disables the Off switch in my brain, but I lapsed twice over the holidays and oh boy did I regret it!

My lot laugh at me, a couple of glasses of wine and I laugh like it's an Olympic event then I fall asleep in the chair and snore like it's an Olympic event.

Hope there were not too may hang overs and they were not bad ones...
