Halloween

Myself & 3 friends would go out on Halloween as kids, would split up into two then meet later in evening dividing money up then go get some chips with batter scrapings at local chippy, any money left we'd get sweet.

Never dressed up, just 2 turnips & that was that, would go outside of where we lived as we were embarrassed to knock on neighbours doors.

Back then it was money, except one kind lady who would make toffee apples then hand them out to those who knocked, one to avoid was a man who was nasty then try to give you a lecture on religion, always made us seeing other kids knock on his door as we knew what was coming.

We get sweets in every year & happy to answer door, when our own kids were little we often got friends & neighbours kids knocking but not in recent years, shame but there it is.

I agree: as someone who isn't a Christian, I abhor what Protestants did to Catholics - and what Catholics did to Protestants.
I abhor anyone who hijacks religious or political beliefs to support and justify their own selfish agendas
