For me it's proteins and time of day - the neogenesis-wotsit by the liver seems to be anywhere from 4-12 hours - so eating a steak after 8pm? Boom. Higher BG at 8am. It then tumbles later in the morning.

Protein for breakfast at 8 = higher BG at 4-8pm timeframe. Get a lovely low reading at lunch, mind.
Something to think about in the future, still grappling with carbs... then with the addition of calories.

Also, still letting my liver recover from drinking too much alcohol in the last twenty years (I've been on the wagon since February this year).

Welcome to the forum @Silent Sands

Hope the insulin doses begin to settle soon. Many T2 members here who move to insulin find basal:bolus a far more flexible system, though it does require 4-5 doses a day.

Separating out meal and background insulins means that you can move your meals about, eat more or less, or skip them entirely.

Though there may be other reasons why mixed insulin might be more suitable in your case.

Do mention your hypos to your nurse though - they will certainly want to keep an eye on them!

Will do. No doubt the hypo's will become commonplace until I get to grips with types of food/carbs.

Hopefully not too commonplace as your nurse should advise reducing your insulin dose if you are having them too frequently.

This is something that would be welcome if a little unpleasant in the meantime but not just yet if my evening BG readings are anything to go by.
