Hello friends

I’m day 11 as a newbie type 1. I’ve been injecting lose doses of insulin for 11 days and my BG has reduced from the high 20s to 9/10/11s.

Just this last week my hair is failing out in handfuls . An internet search suggests that hair loss occurs with high BG/ketones but I’ve been high (v high) for 9 months with no loss and now, just this last week, it’s tumbling out. Any suggestions please? Only other thing that has changed is that I’m taking a second dose of antibiotics for persistent UTIs.

Thank you.

I wonder if it's because your body is now returning to normal, and has started growing new hair again. Normally, old hair is pushed out by new hairs developing, but in times of stress (this happens in pregnancy too) no new hair is produced, so the old hair lingers on until a fresh burst of hair growing activity as you recover pushes more of the old out at once. If this is the case, you should gradually be aware of fine short hair at the base, which will eventually grow to the length you want it.

Sorry @Calf00 - that’s not something I regularly hear

Hope it calms down for you soon.

A friend with Type 1 had hair loss in the weeks after diagnosis. So it’s not impossible. However, it can also be a sign of thyroid problems, so if it persists it would be worth seeking advice, if only to reassure you that all’s well.

Thank you Robin

Just to point out Diabetes and Thyroid are condtion that go together.
Thank you v much. Yes, I have pre-existing autoimmune issues. I have Asthma, Vitiligo and Graves Disease. As a result of the Graves I had a total thyroidectomy in 2009 and I also lost all four parathyroids during the surgery. So I need to take daily high doses of levothyroxine, vitamin D and calcium. My last endocrine blood tests (3 wks ago) showed that my thyroid and calcium levels were stable but vitamin D was dangerously low.
