Relationship to Diabetes

Hi Guys,

So having lost 4 stones since April all thanks to what i believe was Tuberculosis i am now in possession of a slim frame to start working from :D

Basically my appetite is coming back and it's coming back strong. It's the same feeling i had when i first quite smoking i just had an urge to eat.

Now i've got the same urge and i know that sooner or later the weight will come piling back on.

I went to see a few gyms last week and spoke to various reps as to what is the best way moving forward and what my aims are. To be fair only one of them knew anything about diabetes and they all asked for a doctors note stating i am good to train.

Two of the gyms are the type where you will have a bit of a wrestling match and a kicky punchy with a partner. It is fairly obvious that this will lead to bruising and possibly some cuts.

I have an appointment booked with my doctor on Tuesday AM. I'm looking forward to it really as i want to know if the healing time for any cuts and bruises is more being a T2 or not.

Does anyone here have any experience of gym work and diabetes?

Haven't been to a gym since diagnosis, but cuts and bruises should heal well providing you have good blood sugar control - it is high blood sugars which can encourage infection.

Good luck! 🙂

I have been to gyms since diagnosis and nobody has ever asked me to get a doctor's note. Just as well, as my doc does not do them for things like that and I don't blame her. Before diagnosis there was one gym that saw the meds I was on for high cholesterol, high blood pressure etc and they asked for a doctor's note - I walked away.

I don't do anything that would cause cuts or bruises. I suppose it is more toning exercises really and I can't push too much and get seriously out of breath because of the heart problems.

My gym were not bothered about a doctors note as such; I had to complete a health questionairre.

Since I was in good health there was no problem.

When having surgery (T2 picked up on pre-op tests) 3 years ago I was told diabetes could slow down the healing period after & make you more prone to an infection; but I have to say it didn't seem to.

I had no trouble. Can't say I'd be keen on a gym which involved getting bruised; can you avoid this bit or do you fancy the kicky punchy bit!

I prefer to get outdoors and run, but find the gym useful too.

I have not had a problem with either - actually both helped me get my weight and blood glucose down, and get fit.

I would look for a gym with a good selection of cardio and strength building machines, suitable opening hours. Also be careful what you are signing up for if you go for a contract, e.g. how easy/costly is it to cancel the contract if you need to at a later date.

Went to see Doctor on Tuesday and result :D

I'm good to join a gym (must keep an eye on sugar levels and take something with me in case it goes low). I can also join a kicky punchy gym as the longer healing period is a risk with higher BS levels however must still be careful.

Above all must listen to the body.
