Can't believe I'm coming to my 3 month anniversary - 3 months ago Twinkle took me to the GP (to make sure I got there and to be my guide and my guinea pig - thanx Twink!) and I had the initial diagnosis confirmed the following week.

So I had blood taken for the Hba1c to be repeated today - a few days early but wanted to join it up with an appt I've already got in place to see my GP about my BP review, which is on Friday.

My control on the whole seems to have been really good. I have abstained and avoided appropriately! There have been a few lows of less than 4 and a few highs but nothing apparently greater than 10 in that time (but generally I have tested before eating and at 2 hours afterwards just to give you an indication of where those numbers sit. For all I know, my +1 readings could have been higher than 10). I have also lost 2.5 stone. :D

On diagnosis my Hba1c was 9.8 (84 in new money 😉).

What will it be now .......🙂

I'm going to guess 7.8 good luck Sheena x

I'll go with 7.6% wishing you lots of luck. You've done brilliantly in just 3 months! 🙂

I'm going for 8.7% but hoping it's lower for you!

7.2 god luck

I am going for a 6, not sure what the . will be though 🙂

Well done for everything xx

OMG 😱 (allow me that, obviously caught from my 14 year old daughter) - can't believe the result.

New money 42

Old money 6 :D
So there are a few winners here!

So my prize? Increase in Ramipril to 10mgs a day and addition of Simvastatin 40mg a day with another LFT and U&E test in 6wks ish.

I am very surprised though - I didn't think I'd get that sort of result first time round from my starting position of 84/9.8%. How the heck do I maintain that forever?

(whilst Metformin stays the same)

Tried to talk to my GP about increasing my carb a little (i.e. adding one slice of wholemeal seeded bread from those mini sized loaves with my lunch) during the winter and she was shocked (Twinkle knows what my GP is like - my original prescription read "Metformin - once a day but take second tablet with evening meal if BG is high" - doh! DN got another one of the GPs to change it to twice a day 😛).

GP doesn't think I need any additional carbs. The control is good and the weight is coming off so it ticks all her boxes. I have all-bran and fresh berries for breakfast (doesn't cause me any problems with my BG), cheese or ham salad (with coleslaw) and fruit for lunch, then evening meal with very little carb (2 small new pots or spoonful of brown rice or pasta) followed by more berries and sometimes a bit of cream and or a sugar free jelly (I do treat myself to half a dozen chips with a meal if we're out and that's about once a fortnight ish and have had fish and chips 3 times in the last 3 months).

I tried to get across that I'm a little worried about longer term boredom setting in and, not being funny, I'm not sure I want salad every day for the rest of my life. But, as I always go to pieces when dealing with anything medical, I didn't persue it further. I think I'll find a good hearty soup for the winter and try that once I find one that ticks the boxes. GP was genuinely chuffed for me though and we won't do another Hba1c for 6 months now - yay!

Thanks everyone!! xxx

Utterly brilliant! Well done you! 🙂 Given the efforts you have put in, it's great that you have been rewarded with such a reduction!

Wow! Well done!

Well done and a massive pat on the back x

Brilliant news and very well deserved! 🙂

Soups!

Hi there Shopaholic! I just thought I would pop my nose in and say that if you are looking for great soups with very little or no carbs look on a slimmingworld site. You can go in and have a look at a menu for a week and there are recipes if you look on google, my fave is red pepper and tomato and it is delicious and has no carbs. I would also phone your diabetes nurse at the hospital and your consultant about your diet as you don't sound like you are having many carbs at all and you do need some in the day or you get tired. You also sound as you are doing wonderfully well with it all, keep it up!

Thanks everyone and thanks for the tip Lady Willpower!

My GP is very much into low carbs herself and is keen to get me losing weight this way (I have more than 10 stone to lose) as well gaining control. If I added it all up I'm probably having about 80 - 100g carb a day, so not too low but yes, intentionally low under the GP's control. Apparently they take the same approach with heart patients.

Compared to pre-diagnosis, I have lots of energy 😉 but will see how I feel after another 3 months of this sort of regime and will also start to get some regular exercise soon. Although I did manage a 4.5 mile walk with my daughter who was on a hack out on a 17.2 hands high horse on Sunday at "big horse" pace (i.e. fast for me - very red faced on our return!) which I did and kind of enjoyed. Something I would not have contemplated nor completed 6 months ago.

I will keep an eye on it and will take it up with my DN at the next appointment though.

Thanks! xx
