Am I surprised at being diagnosed type 2 diabetic? Not really, given my age, my weight (I am overweight, certainly not obese though) I thought something like this would come along.
What did surprise me, after being told my blood sugar results indicated I was in fact "border line," my doctor immediately prescribed medication, when in fact I thought I'd get away with just watching my diet and exercising.
I am pretty active and go to the gym at least twice a week, where I do weights and cardio.

Welcome To the forum Ted. It does sound surprising that you've been prescribed medication right away if you are only borderline - I thought people with type 2 were usually advised to watch their diet for a while and see if it could be controlled that way - then again I don't have type 2 - there are probably lots of people on here who know more about that than I do. What medication are you on?

Hi Ted, welcome to the forum. Im a newbie too!!! Only diagnosed 4 weeks ago. They put me on medication straight away as I had silly high blood glucose readings. I knew I was at risk from getting diabetes as I have a strong family history. And despite loosing 7 stone diabetes still came knocking at my door!!!
Hope this forum helps, it is definately helping me.

First of all, thanks for the welcome.
Guess I'm following the herd, so to speak as I'm on Metformin.

Now this IS where I am surprised, as I've been prescribed taking THREE 500g tablets once a day with a meal.
I'm not a doctor, so, I don't feel in any way qualified to question that dosage but, it does seem a lot to me if I'm, as I were told, borderline!
Oh well, life goes on.

I should point out, Grumpy came out of my being called Gramps by my two Granddaughters in the US and in truth, I can be a bit, well a lot actually, grumpy
so, I'm Grumpy!

Welcome Grumpy. I was diagnosed 11 years ago and diet controlled for that time .I was put on Metformin this February just once a day but in June I was taken of them due to only having one kidney. I go back in January where hopefully they will have made up their mind what to do with me. In the meantime I carry on watching what I eat but I do have a treat once a month when I induge in my favourite a Rhum Baba.🙂 I was only 8st 2oz when diagnose so a bit of a surprise as no family history of diabetes.

Welcome from another relative newbie and newbie type 2. (How long do I get to say newbie?).
I was diagnosed in December and put on metformin straight away. I believe there's some others here that were put on it quite quickly. No mention of managing it in any way.

I think the GP gets extra points for putting you on drugs.

I find it better to negotiate with the Diabetic nurse because they have more time to listen (and are easier to persuade).

I get to see the Diabetes nurse on Monday, having made the appointment myself. I thought the doc might have told me to make the appointment after I'd seen him!
I guess it's too late for any drug negotiation.

I've seen the nurse, asked her to write down my blood test results, as I couldn't remember them, which were; fasting 7.4 and after 120 minutes and some Lucozade, 10.9.
From what she told me, it seems regardless of the results, the prescribing of metformin is pretty much automatic.
