Having submitted my licence renewal for on 7th May, supposedly opened by DVLA on 20th May.
Today I get a please fill in a DIAB1 and consent to release GP information to be returned. This is something I did back in February and got a letter back saying I was safe to drive (whatever that means).
Why do I have to suffer this when I am no longer on insulin and they know it😡
And they will probably write to my GP for confirmation of treatment and get no reply as he is in Manchester for 3 wks on a GMC review of his fitness to practice (over-prescribing opiates).

What a mess! Sounds like the DVLA don't know their bum from their elbow...good luck sorting it out, Vicsetter.😱

Good luck in getting it sorted out, looks like DVLA could not organise a pee up in a brewery.

Well it's 4 months tomorrow since I sent my renewal off and ... guess what... my new licence (full) arrived today lasting 4 years instead of 3 (or until my 70th).

Still think it's unfair that when you go on insulin you lose your C and D entitlements and you don't get them back easily, where's the logic?
I also seem to be able to ride a moped (cat AM) and a full size motorbike (cat A), never tried one myself.

Government Agency logic 🙄 Perhaps they think you might have some residual insulin left in you so daren't risk you getting all your entitlements back? 😉

How long?

Hi
You were lucky
I have been diagnosed of having type 2 diabetes since 2001
I drive hgv / lgv/class 1/artic or whatever you want to call it, I had to inform the DVLa I had diabetes which was controlled by tablets and diet! They sent me a letter saying no problems carry on driving, this was fine until the Doctor and diabetic centre put me on insulin twice a day, at which point I had to re inform the DVLa as to what I was doing at which point they revoked my HGV licence and put my car licence on three yearly renewals, this happened about Easter 2014, I was asked to supply the DVLa with three Months worth of sugar readings recorded on a metre, so I had to go on the sick, not having prior knowledge of this three Months readings they would require, this was time wasted, after collecting the three Months worth of time I sent in the readings with a report from my Doctor and diabetes Doctor to DVLa. I had to wait another four Months in which I kept on phoning up to see what was happening to my licence as I needed to go back to work to earn some money as I was not getting paid, I got the same excuse every time, sorry we are running behind schedule as we have a large backlog it will be dealt with as soon as possible, presumably caused by government cut backs.
I did get it back after seven Months of waiting and at least £14,000 out of pocket.
DVLa don’t care if you lose your house or are made bankrupt, I am now in the proverbial deep mire thanks to them.
Hope this helps others who suspect they might have to start injecting, to start sugar readings on a recordable metre as soon as possible (three months) before they do have to start injecting.
All the best luck.

Very sorry to hear about your experience injectorjoe, that should not be allowed to happen - those delays are unacceptable when your livelihood is at stake :(

It may sound unfair to you, but the 3 months readings things IS essential.

All of us on insulin are stuck with the fact that DVLA are slower than a slow thing on a go-slow. It's a pigging nuisance.

Diabetes UK are forever badgering Government and Swansea to improve things and believe you me - both the rules and the delays would probably be even worse if it wasn't for them.

But - all they are wanting to do is protect the rest of the road users - from you having a hypo at the wheel. I have to agree with that in principal, but I also agree with it personally because I'm a person who, years ago, had two separate hypos whilst driving on the M42 - both times by utter luck, just me and the crash barrier - but it could have been VERY different indeed.

I had to give up driving for 12 months and had to change my job.

That's a lot more palatable than having death or injury of some innocent other person on my conscience forever more.
