Hi all. Am very new to this forum but been Type 1 since 1988. I have a quick question which has probably been put on here already : Regarding Corona Virus...as said, am Type 1, and in good health and normal blood sugars. I am self isolating but need to start getting more food in. I can't get a home delivery from anywhere and am told not to go out. I can exercise by walking to the shops but what with social distancing, I am in a bit of a quandary. I have self isolated since last Friday and have no symptoms. Anyone have any answers please ???

Hi Numan, and welcome to the forum. Good to have your depth of experience to be shared on here.

With regard to T1 and the Corona Virus, we are no more likely to catch it than anyone else, however if you caught it it would just require a lot of checking of BG and adjustments to insulin doses. We are not on the list of people that need to self isolate, just required to stay at home now apart from necessary trips to shops (but with a reduction as much as possible), for medicine and for exercise.

Have a read of this and see if it helps

With regard to going into shops, the ones that Inhave been to have all made arrangements by reducing the number of tills and marking out 2m spacing boxes, to help people keep their distance.
Like you we looked to do an online shop but no one has capacity for this now, so we are just trying to shop once a week, or use the local shop if we run out.

I hope that helps, but come back with any questions or concerns that you have.

Thank you Tee G - your reply is just what I needed. If anyone else needs my help or diabetes experience, please feel free to contact me on here. XXX.

There is a lot of uncertainty, and caution around at the moment - its only natural. These are strange times. I guess we just have to use our common sense. Go shopping for food/medical supplies. Be mindful of our surrounding, and wash hand when we get back home. Leave footwear by the door. and just be as careful as we can be - good luck - stay well.

Welcome to the forum @Numan

You aren’t recommended to fully isolate at the moment - but just to be very careful about the social distancing measures, and restrict contact with others.

Well managed T1 doesn’t seem to increase your risk of catching/developing severe case of covid19, but if you did happen to be one of the small proportion that developed a severe illness then you would be at increased risk of DKA etc.

Probably a good opportunity to brush up on your Sick Day Rules!

If you really don’t want to go out, you can have a look at local fruit and veg boxes being delivered in your area - they can usually include bread, milk, eggs, etc. It just depends on how oversubscribed they are at the moment. I’m getting food delivered this way for now as no delivery slots for my supermarket for ages. Good luck!
