Hello! I am new here and newly diagnosed type 2 so everything is a puzzle.

My GP yelped in shock when I assumed I could eat lots of green veg. ( which I like) He said it would upset the warfarin I take as blood thinner. Dispensing chemist however, thought it wd be ok to eat more greenstuff and fairly straightforward for GP to adjust my warfarin dosage accordingly. who's right please?
Maybe all newbies find this - but diet seems sooo controversial. I simply dont know what to eat and am almost at "eat drink and be merry because with luck . . etc"

Hi Sienna, can I ask why you're on warfarin? It's a pretty potent blood thinning drug, and levels do need to be checked periodically to make sure you're on the right dose. I'd have a chat with your GP to find out what the issues are.

A quick look at Wiki indicates that green leafy veg contain lots of vitamin K, and that the purpose of warfarin is to inhibit clotting by reducing vitamin K levels. I presume the pharmacist meant that your dose could be increased to allow for a change of vitamin K intake in your diet.

LeeLee, thanks. Im on warfarin because of heart arrhythmia devloped after a hip-op 12 years ago. Theyre v good about testing regularily and changing the dose a bit if necessary to keep blood right. Interesting about the vitamin K, I wonder which bits of me will fall off because I havent enough vitamin K ? LOL

Hi Sienna,

Be guided by your G.P. as he has access to your blood test results unlike your Chemist.
You would know if you were not getting enough Vitamin K. and I expect your blood tests incorporate this.

You can also overdose on Warfarin so please accept that until things improve, you cannot overindulge on greens. It is not as simple as saying 4oz. cabbage equals an extra 2mgs. of Warfarin as everyone will respond individually.

A friend on warfarin said they could not have too much vitamin K found in things like brocoli and cucumer skin, hence the blanket ban for now on green vege.
