Hello all, diagnosed a type 2 three months ago, put on one metformin a day, hb1ac was 61 to start. I also immediately kicked myself in the backside and stopped eating rubbish. Since the 26th of April I've lost 2.5 stone and my hb1ac result this week was 48! I'm so pleased as that's not hugely over normal.

At what point would I be able to safely stop taking metformin? It makes me sick and I'm afraid of long term damage.

Hi. Well done, you’ve obviously worked very hard. Do you take the Metformin with or directly after meals as that is supposed to help with the side effects.
I was wondering if the slow release Metformin would he better for you.

Great work, well done! 🙂 If your trajectory continues then I would imagine you will be able to manage without the metformin before long. Keep up the good work, and perhaps enquire about the slow-release as suggested for now, and see what your next review shows 🙂

Thanks! I'm still going as I really don't want to take any tablets I can manage without. Only bad part is my doctor is hard core for tablets and my next hb1ac is going to be a year if I'm not mistaken
Long time to take tablets if my numbers drop low enough before then

Well, it's you that has to take the tablets, not the doctor. I've known quite a few members here who have managed quite well without metformin when their daily readings have fallen significantly, but obviously only you can make that judgement for yourself 🙂

I'm at 44 pre-diabetic so not taking tablets. I hope to lose enough weight to reduce from 44 to a more normal number.

Are you self testing?
if so you could try gently cutting back on the metformin & see if you maintain reasonable figures (my DSN suggests 5-8 before meals but I prefer to be <6 they think my latest HbA1c is Too good, yeah right).
be aware that it can take a few days for the affects of metformin to build up/wear down so if you do take this approach* do it slowly.

If you are not self testing it is highly recommended, I doubt I would have achieved my current figures if I had not had a meter to know what was working & what was not.
