Morning all. So since being diagnosed on the 11th Feb with Hba1c of 133 and BG of 30 I have cut out all 'obvious' sugars and slowly coming to terms with having D. Over the past day or so my readings have been anywhere between 5.2 and 13.4. Woke up this morning and it was 7 (lowest it has been on waking) Which I am really pleased with ...it's going in the right direction!
I feel like I am living on chicken and veg though and find on the evening I am starving..does anyone have any ideas for 'good' snacks???

Good news Nico...its been such a short time since diagnosis you are clearly working hard...heading in the right direction...my advice...don't rush...no need for a bland boring diet...suggest you look at the 'What did you eat today' thread for suggestions...and Mark Parrott is the 'go to man' for recipes and ideas on foods...and snacks.

Hi Nico, I'm relieved to hear that your numbers are finally coming down to reasonable levels 🙂 Still concerned that you are having to limit your food choices so much in order to achieve it, so be vigilant! 🙂

Thanks Northerner. Had 1 piece of burgen bread toast a couple of hours ago with a coffee and just tested 11.2!! Ppffft what's that all about?? Most people seem to recommend it on here

Did you test before eating? It's not so much the final number you are concerned with at this stage, more important is to see how much the toast raised your levels by 🙂

I only tested about half an hour before eating and it was 7 (when I woke up). Should I have tested again??

No, that should give you an idea - the toast appears to have raised your levels by around 4 mmol/l, which isn't huge 🙂

I am okay with Burgen Bread Nico...but it is not suitable for everyone...some here find it does spike their BG levels...I'm afraid its very much trial & error...that's why I believe it's so short sighted of GP's not to provide testing meters routinely for type 2's...there are other high protein breads you can try...the only useful way is to try it and see...record the results...give yourself time to workout a suitable...sustainable long term plan for managing your diabetes...I was all over the place when I started...nowhere near as organised as you...things will soon fall into place.

I have found that I can eat the Lidl high protein rolls with scarcely a blip.
Testing just before and two hours after eating gave me insight into how different foods affect me, now I have seen a reading under 5mmol/l after just over three months, so I am very happy with that.
I do eat celery with soft cheese, or high fat yoghurt with desiccated coconut - but if I am hungry I tend to eat another meal - I always have salad in the fridge, and cooked meat, or there is Dr Atkins revenge - bacon, eggs and whatever else you fancy - mushrooms are my usual choice, or perhaps a bowl of minced beef with onion, sweet peppers, mushrooms, warmed up from the freezer. In the warmer weather I expect that tuna salad will be on the menu too. Just stick to low carb foods and use your meter to show you what spikes you, and with any luck you'll see your average levels begin to fall.

My snacks:
Cold meats. Just about any will do.
Celery & peanut butter.
Ryvita (pumpkin & oat) with peanut butter or duck pate and a few pickles.
Lidl protein roll halved with melted blue cheese (I tried burgen but it spikes my BG).
High fat yoghurt with a few raspberries.
Double cream and rasps.
Nuts - various.
Pickled herring.

Thanks everyone. I've lost nearly 2 stone in the last couple of months and really don't want to lose any more!

This is one of the things that concerns me Nico - I had rapid weight loss prior to my Type 1 diagnosis (I lost 21 pounds over about 12 months prior to diagnosis, then a further 17 pounds in 3 days when I fell ill with a virus which basically overwhelmed my pancreas' ability to produce the insulin I needed). Rapid weight loss indicates that your body is not producing enough insulin, whereas weight gain is more usually associated with insulin resistance, where you are producing plenty of insulin but unable to use it properly. So, apologies if I seem to be always wittering on about it, just bear in mind they might have got it wrong 🙂 Keep testing, and if you haven't got anything to test ketones with, please ask your nurse or doctor for some pee sticks at the very least - they're cheap as chips, so they can't object on price! 🙄 From what you say, you're obviously not overweight, so I think your diagnosis has been based largely on your age (i.e. you are not a child).

It will definitely be a question i ask when I finally get to see my GP next week! Thank you

Hi, Nico & welcome to the forum. Check out the recipes section on this forum for food ideas. I find i am now eating a much more varied diet than I was before diagnosis. I use a lot of herbs & spices in my food to give it flavour. I recommend the Diet Doctor website for tasty ideas.
