I’m pre diabetic and have porridge oats with mixed seeds, cinnamon and berries everyday for breakfast. I’m dairy free too. As a newbie to this, am I having the wrong thing? I do eat eggs with advocado at lunch and salad. I’m trying to juggle what I think is good for me. I’ve cut carbs down and having xylitol very occasionally on breakfast.

Hello and welcome.

Porridge is generally not a good choice because it's quite "carby". Full fat Greek yoghurt with berries would be a better choice or a protein-rich breakfast like eggs with bacon. If you're not dairy free by choice, that's okay, but if not, full fat dairy is recommended, e.g., cream in coffee, butter etc.

The best advice is to buy a blood glucose meter to enable you to check which foods you can tolerate. Many people go really low carb and then gradually introduce the higher carb foods, such as pasta, rice, bread, and potatoes. You should check your BG at the start of a meal, then two hours later. Ideally, you should not see a rise above 2 mmol/l.

Hopefully, others will be along soon with tips and advice.

You may want to consider the quantity of oats to look at how many carbs in that one meal, and also factor in the total days carbs to consider whether or not to change.

I'm prediabetic and I have approx 30g oats/oat bran (50/50 mix) with a greek style yogurt and blueberries or strawberries. I'm assuming the information on the packet is not 100% accurate, but using it as a guideline the oats/oat bran alone provide approx 16g carbs. I like to go for the oats as my cholesterol is currently high. My average daily carbs atm is around 90g.

Raspberry, strawberry and blueberry seem to be the lowest carb fruits (in that order).

I don't eat porridge but I sometimes do overnight oats (Quaker or Sainsbury's Organic) in place of my usual (single) Weetabix but stick to a max of 20g, which is roughly on a par with one Weetabix (13g carb). I add Greek yogurt, some frozen Summer Fruit Mix, some chopped strawberry and a few blueberries and stick it in the fridge until the morning.

I live on those fruits. Delicious. I’m going to have eggs and mushrooms for breakfast tomorrow

Blackberries are around the same as raspberries for carbs, but I find I can't always get them.
