Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1.5 LADA
As a type 1.5 LADA Diabetic I am on Glimepiride & also I am on Perindopril ( Ace Inhibitor ) for long standing high blood pressure.

I have just read that taking the two together means that the effect of the Glimpiride is increased.

Does anyone have any info on this ? Are you on both & had any Issues ?

Many Thanks

Hi David. I can’t find that interaction on the extensive BNF information. Where did you find that?

It is in Glimepiride Package Leaflet it refers to Ace Inhibiters can increase the blood suger lowering effect of Glimepiride, I have been getting some Hypos after minimul activity, I started on 3mg cut to 2 mg & now on 1 mg I wondered if the interaction was causing the need to reduce the dosage ?

Yup, I’ve found it after a bit of Internet digging. Ask your GP if he is aware of that interaction, and whether your anti hypertensive medication can be changed. Can I ask, how did you come to be diagnosed as LADA? And what other medication are you on?

After being floored with a bug a Christmas I was drinking a Lot ( soft drinks ) & up every 2 hours to pee during the night. I self diagnosed as Diabetic as I have a Daughter & Grandaughter as Type 1 it was the first guess. Checked My Bloods with Meter and got 20.2 at 6pm up to 32 at bedtime after a big meal.
It took a few calls to the receptionist & then a visit to the surgery to get them to take me seriously. 3 Month blood test showed 111 so it had been on the go for a while. After a while I got the Gada test back so its 1.5 LADA, Expecting to end up on Insulin but at the moment the Glimepride is doing the trick. In fact its working to well thus the Hypos.

If it’s LADA, insulin is inevitable. In fact, with levels like 20.2 and 32 I’m surprised you aren’t on insulin already. Seems daft pigging about with T2 treatment, as many on the forum will attest. Flogging your ailing pancreas with Glimeprimide is maybe not the best idea, but it’s all part of the fun of T1.5. What are your BG scores like currently?

My average for the last 2 weeks is 6.2, There was a discussion at the hospital about starting on Insulin, but by the time I saw them I had my readings under controll so they desided that there was no imediate need for insulin just yet. Although i know it will be required in due course.

Fair enough - the honeymoon period🙂 Keep an eye out for big spikes in the BG, or high waking numbers and you should be fine.

All the best, take care, and let us know how you get on.🙂
