Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello all you knowledgeable people. i have been diabetic for about 10 years type2, through this time I have taken Metformin 1000 twice a day, but for the last few years it has not been controlled, so have tried al the daily/weekly injections which didn’t agree with me. I have been through a very stressful time over the last 3 months and have been eating things I know are not good and have nit been testing. Well last week i tested my bloods and they were 19!!! Went to see the clinic and they put me on Gliclazide 80 mg 1 a day. Although they have gradually come down are still high 10-12 I have been cutting carbs to 20g per day and no sweet things do you think these tablets are not working or shoukd I give it more time? I do not want to go on insulin. Any suggestions please.. Thank you for reading

Hi @Nosbod, and welcome to the forum.

Like @grovesy I found that gliclazide worked for me. When I stopped taking it my BG went up and when I restarted it they went back down again, so I am happy it worked for me and its effect was seen in a couple of days. But that was me. Whether it would be the same for you is a different question altogether!

I would keep testing for a few days and check for meal rises and take the data back to the clinic. They may suggest increasing the dose. By the way, 20g carbs a day is very low. We have members who operate at that level but it takes a bit of dedication. Are you sure you are counting everything?

Hello, thank you fir your reply, yes Its very very difficult, I have done it before and got my numbers down to a regular 6 so know it works, Dr couldnt believe it, but went on holiday and stopped, its hard to maintain... but thought I woukd do it just to help the gliclazide.. but it will be 7 days today. My bloods this morning fasting was 11.9 so they are going down. But like I say dont think I can keep it up...

Can you get a phone appointment to discuss with who ever prescribed for you.

I think @grovesy is about right. 7 days on gliclazide, a very low carb intake and still have waking double figures seems to me to be something worth having a discussion about, especially if you are dubious about whether you can keep the low carb up.

Welcome to the forum @Nosbod

Sorry to hear that you are finding things difficult to maintain.

Hope the Gliclazide works well for you and allows you some dietary freedom.

20g a day is very low carb (I think you’d have to be a bit careful with that on Glic so that you were safe from hypos).

Is it that low carb feels very ‘cant eat that’ to you? What do you eat when you are low carbing? What do you miss? (members may be able to suggest swaps and workarounds) And are you increasing fats and proteins to help you feel full?

At the end of the day, the diabetes management strategy that works for you will be one which gives you BG results you are happy with, is affordable, and sustainable long term. And that will be a unique combination of a menu that suits you, a level of activity you can maintain, and whatever meds you need.

Good luck in finding that balance 🙂

Hi, thank you for that having to cope with covid now, so really need to get sugars down..

D'you mean you've had a positive Covid test or just the overall effect of the pandemic?
