Be grateful to learn of anyone's experiences positive OR negative with gliclazide re it's side effects and comparisons to Metformin (even though they work differently)
Im on both, metformin didnt do anything for my blood levels (my dose is now being reduced). Im on 60mg of gliclizide before breakfast, blood levels started to come down almost straight away. And i get no side effects from them.
I am on both but slow released for both.
On slow release for Metformin because of gut issues. Glicazide because I did not like the speed of falling blood glucose.
Was on 2x80mg gliclazide twice a day and 2X 1000mg slow release Metformin for many years without any problems until the last year when I became aneamic and the doc thought it was the tablets so they took me off of them both and now on MDI and feeling a lot better🙂 I have a lot more energy and am now doing regular 3/4 -1 hour walks every day which I was unable to do before.
I've taken them with Metformin for 10+ years now and I find that I must have my lunch at a regular time otherwise my BG tends to go a bit low. Otherwise I am fine with them.
Can't comment on metformin as I can't be prescribed it due to eGFR level but gliclazide was great for me when i weaned off insulin, once i persuaded surgery & Boots that 40 mg WAS available (splittable to 20mg) Never had major problems with hypos (possibly due to helpful pharmacist) and gently weaned myself off that too!
I take 80mg in a morning and 80mg on a night. I've had a couple bad hypos but only due to my own fault. Taking my Gliclazide then going to the gym without eating! You do need to check your blood sugars regularly when on gliclazide just to make sure you don't go too low.
I was on max dose Met and Glic before insulin. Glic seems to work well by stimulating the pancreas when there are some beta cells left. In my case even with 320mg/day it finally had little effect. There appear to be few side effects with Glic apart from hypos if your dose is too high. I had no side effects at all.
