The style of this book is quite perky, with much less background discussion of the Glycaemic Index (GI) and Glycaemic Load (GL) and the science behind it all than in The Glycaemic Factor. Having said that, it is the remit of the ?Dummies? books to give basic and practical knowledge in the least complicated manner, and in that it succeeds. The emphasis is not so much on the beneficial effect of a GL diet on blood sugar, but much more on weight loss, so in that respect it comes across as a ?diet? in perhaps the more conventionally (if not accurately) accepted meaning of the word.

After a brief overview of the premise of GL the book quickly gets into a number of chapters on how to stock your cupboard up with GL-friendly staples and meal plans that are based on low GL recipes. It concludes with a couple of chapters on the medical benefits of following a GL diet and how it fits in with a healthy lifestyle.

I found the book to be an easy read, with lots of basic information to get you understanding and started on the GL concept. It doesn?t need to be read from cover-to-cover as the chapters are written largely stand-alone, and with clear headings and subsections outlined in the contents. If you plan going down the GL route ( and you should really investigate it if you have diabetes), then this is a very clear and useful introduction.

Just got this book from Amazon making some really intersting reading🙂

Is this book that good? As you may know Im hoping to persuade my gp/consultant to be allowed to carb count have the extra insulin involved. This is going to be a very long battle for me to fight. Is it a book for a complete beginner who has no idea to start with ?
cheers

I've just bought GL Diet for Dummies on Amazon, it was ?5.99 and free delivery (was ?9.99) quite an interesting read, probably won't use it much for carb counting though (I use Carbs and Cals).

Yes, it's more for learning about food combinations than for actual carb counting - Carbs and Cals is excellent for that! 🙂
