Last week i went high every day at around 5 -6 o clock , so my partner and i sat down and went through everything i did around lunch time and what i ate for my lunch , now all i could think of was that every lunch time i have a sandwitch in brown seeded bread either i will have egg ham turkey or tuna in this sandwitch so i guessed it wou'dnt be that
.
what i wanted to ask was what do people spread on the sandwitches at lunchtime and do you limit the amount of bread you have ??

I usually have philadelphia low fat spread, Skippy peanut butter, or marmite. I find Burgen bread is good since it has half the carbs of other breads but unlike ones like Vogel, the slices seem to be a satisfying size.

ahh so is they any good butters i could use though? i dont like that phillidelphiai have seen that burgen bread i will buy it next time then if it is good .cheers LIzzie x

Hello Steff, have you tried testing 1 and 2 hours after your lunch? It would give you a clearer idea of the impact of your sandwich.

Personally I've found I'm really cutting down on bread now as it seems to make me go higher than I'd like. I make my own bread (or, more accurately, chuck the ingredients in the breadmaker and press the button) and find rye or spelt bread far better as I'm not over keen on seeded wholemeal. Burgen was ok though.

For "buttery" spreads - look for mono-unsaturated or poly-unsaturated ones. However, I'm not particularly keen on them so now when have a sandwich I don't tend to put a spread on it but use a some salad and/or tomato to add some moistness

Hiya Steff

Truthfully, I tend to eat more brown bread since I was diagnosed but I have tested myself after lunch to ensure that I'm not going too high. I tend to eat very lean ham and low fat cheese!

Hi steff09.
Have you thought about having a salad sandwich and add some lean ham or grilled chicken. Also I have rice cakes they are only 28 calories a slice with 6.0g of carbs of which 0.2g is sugar, they are ideal for me cuz I can't eat wheat, or what about a bowl of soup.

I love bread and buy a combo of Burgen Soya and Linseed bread as its weighty and a better stomach filler it feels! Its value for insulin I think at 1.1 units perslice. The other I buy is Weightwatchers malted loaf which comes in at 0.8units per slice and is actually much nicer than it sounds! Keep an eye out for Nimble brown, again 0.8 units per slice and yummy I think (made by warburtons as is the weightwatchers) I bulk up with salads, low fat/calorie dressing such as KRAFT Light caesar salad dressing (reduced in sainsburys this week to only 26p a bottle!) and they also sell low fat chicken peices to make your salads more tasty. I am a woman of routine, every lunch I have a special K bar 1.5 units. Routine isnt MY prison (or however the phrase goes...?!?!) because part of my freedom from all this maths and weighing and tinking about diabetes all the time is to pre-pare I love to take my lunch to work and know exactly how many CPs and units I am dealing with.

I would say in the early days like these are for you, dont stress it too much. You will also find what works well for and your numbers, when you find out what catagorically goes wrong for you too! I have had this years and still cant control myself for a bag of chips from the chippy in my street! I weigh it, stare at it, sweat it over what on earth I equate it too and get it wrong every time! When I need to throw my arms up in the air and not want to do this anymore its a bar of Green and Blacks Dark 70% cocoa chocolate! I love it and the whole 100g is only 3.5 units!!

I think you sound as if you already half way there, you are thinking about what you are eating, try to go low fat and healthy and you will work it out. I had a very nice dietician at the clinic, but unfortunately know such thing existed in diabetes care until last year so only got an appointment then. I found that quite useful (but the plastic imatation food she had plated up rather disturbing!).

normal heinz tinned soup or make my own suop?

thanks everyone some new ideas there for me to try

yes sugar im getting there slowly

Steff, if you have time to make soup I would definately recommend it.

I make carrot and orange and it's now my favourite, I love it. I used to love tomato soup but now I think carrot and orange is better. Soup is so easy to make and it's so much more nutritional than the tinned stuff.

btw, I love your thread titles Steff :D

:DI make my own as then I know whats in them, I had french onion today, tom and red pepper yesterday, cauliflower the day before.

Wholemeal is usually 20 carbs per slice and a GI of around 80. Burgen is 11.9 carbs per slice and a GI around 45 (unconfirmed. I have only seen foreign GI figures for burgen)

Skippy peanut butter had transfats in it the last time I checked. Could have changed tho.

With soups, many of the canned are high GI and high carb. If making your own, avoid potatoes, carrots and other root veggies as much as possible.

Note: Be careful with some of the suggestions above. Being on insulin is significantly different. A special K bar is held together with glucose syrup IIRC. Less of a problem if you are shooting to cover it, but if not on insulin its a different ball game.

I eat a fair amount some days and as my nurse told me I shouldn't adjust my self or diet too much so I munch on whatever.

I did used to get high around 5-6pm also, this wasn't to do with lunch, more the snacking after lunch after the novarapid had worn off. Now I eat more at lunch, making sure I inject the right amount having tested before I eat, and generally all is well.

On another note, I have been making bread via a machine too (started primarily to save money) good fun, also have been using the bread machine to make dough for pizzas, not sure if it is healthier, but it's cheaper and more fun!

LOL ty katie i do try and be imaginative , i like the sound of soup as well shall try that and tell you how i get on carolyn ty VBH and mac x

Very easy soup...

My hubby only like clear soup with bits in! An extremely quick and tasty recipe and very low carb:
1 bag of chopped vegetables - from supermarket - sometimes they are classed as caserole vegetables, sometimes soup vegetables - i am not fussy!
Add any other veg you like.
1 large pan of water
4 stock cubes
fresh chilli to taste.
Chopped bacon or lardons - or chicken or tofu pieces (anything you fancy really!)

Just boil up the whole lot together and then simmer - the longer the better - it is quite ofeten better the day after!

Sounds terrible but it really is so tasty!

mmm sounds nice actually i can get most of them ingrediants

cheers admin

I usually like a ham sandwich, I usually get weight watchers white bread, as I only like white bread, I will have ham or corned beef usually. I prefer shop broought sandwiches- but they are not good for my wallet or blood sugars.

I make my own soup sometimes, turkey, veg and gravy. freeze it in individual portions and get them out the night before to take to work.
