Little Miss Chatterbox
Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
On Friday I was late for work cause of traffic therefore was a rush to get in, Friday is our busiest day sometimes doing 60 covers in 25 minutes, this Fridays was one of those days so I didn't have time to eat, I pinched a piece of pork crackling from behind the bar but that was it, I came in at 530 and ate at 615 and by 7 I was giddy as anything racing around cleaning etc, is it cause of lack of food then suddenly having food that caused this?? Admittedly this ain't the first time it's happened,so I just want to know what's the body's process in this instance .

Thanks .

I'm not sure what the bodily process is Steff but I have found, esp as I've got older (how boring LOL) I do actually HAVE to eat - something - fairly regularly.

Certainly more than a bit of cracklin, LOL - should have sent it me and eaten something else LOL

Nowt to do with being diabetic though - a person just can't go that long on their feet doing stuff and not take on sustenance, I know it's really hard, daughter is a part-time chef and also a waitress in a busy pub restaurant. (she's a fully trained chef but she doesn't want it F/T and prefers front of house these days.) And I did bar work meself a very long time ago. Anyway she could go all day at one time - not now though - so she doesn't!

You just HAVE to eat. Something!

For as long as I can remember I have been told you must eat regular meals. As you need to eat during your shift at work have a word with your manager and explain because of your medical needs you need to eat on a regular basis so can he/she help you work out a break or breaks so you can have a snack that would cause minimal disruption. If that doesn't work speak to your doctor and see if he or she will give you a letter of some kind to help you over this period.

Sound advice above, plus did you manage to grab a drink at all? Dehydration can cause giddiness too... Hope you manage to persuade them to sort your breaks out so you're not left feeling grim like this, it just doesn't sound safe (given the busy kitchen environment!) at all. Take care of yourself... X

Hiya thanks guys

I had a glass of soda water about 2,thing is I only do 6 hours on a Friday, and your not allowed a break unless u do 7 hrs or more...

That's rubbish! If you work 6 hours, you are entitled to 20 minutes. That's that law, and it's there to protect you. (Under 6 hours they don't have to give you a break.)

Think I'd check the break thing. Unless it has changed I don't think you are supposed to work more than 4 hours without a break. When I worked in a shop, although it was only 5 hours, if I didn't get my break I used to make a fuss and one day when I didn't get a break I told the manager I am going home half an hour early.

Thanks again seems I've been a tool then, as I never have more them 10 mins ever grr

doing some jobs you get a 45 minute break for a 7 hour day, and if the person relieving you is late you often get told off for being late back too or have to cut your break short.

Hi Steff,
is there any way to have a small cereal bar, whilst working?

Perhaps try Belvita biscuits Steff - I find that they don't have too big an impact on my levels and they are around 8.5g carbs each. Or Ryvita?

Nutrigrain are lovely... but probably the worst choice. Alpen Light are much lower carb/sugar/cals and I've recently discovered Nak'd bars. The banana bread and berry ones are my choices (the chocolate ones are too high cal for me).

Thank u I will try belvita when I go back.

yeah i like those nutri grain bars but stopped having them as i thought they would be a pain for my bs?

Have a delve in the shops and inspect the labels of all the bars 🙂
Find the lowest carb one and see what happens. If you are rushing around like mad I doubt you would spike having something like that and might stop the giddy spell.

Another thought (dangerous I know) Are you drinking enough, or have you become dehydrated due to the heat in the kitchen?

The only problen I have with Belvita is that the little packs inside come in 4s and I don't have a fully functioning OFF switch once a packet is open! :D

Sue your scaring me now all these thoughts lol

I do usually take 2ltr bottle of water in with me and take slurps throughout th day

Thanks sue
