Granma
Good luck with the appt Thursday hope all goes well

Where these cases recent.............?

I would think today that individuals would be assessed before they were accepted to whether they could make it work.......?I can see this level of assessment not begin consistent throughout the country though.....🙂

I have know recent cases of pump removal. The removal was richley deserved.

But Grandma will be fine we will all help where we can 🙂

The way your talking suggests they were not prepared for the pump, how did they manage to get one in the first place

I actually know someone who had every complication under the sun virtually so got a pump, but no education to speak of.

Her friend from pre-schooldays (my step-daughter) made the comment to me when I first had my pump and was saying 'I could see myself taking it off to have a shower and forgetting to put it back on' - that Yes - I might do that, she could see how that could happen. However she didn't think it was ever so likely that I would then leave it off for the next 3 days, which her friend had certainly been known to do ........ and the friend's husband actually said to me that he thought I'd get on really well with it because he thought I took an interest in it and actually knew one helluva lot more about my diabetes than his wife did ......

You can lead a horse to water ......

Your guess is as good as mine.

I'm getting one too!!!😱 Had the call today, funding approved and I have a meeting next thursday 12th to discuss what's best for me and pick the pump.

So What one do I pick when I don't know what they will offer?

I don't usually do 'apprehensive' or scared but I have to admit, the thought of wearing one forever, all the time is getting to me a little.

The 'who' gets and 'assessment' isn't consistent clinics and not just from clinic to clinic but individual to individual within a clinic😱

How they assess somebody can be quite mind boggling... As if somebody is going to make good use of insulin pump therapy then they tend to have a good understanding to where and why they can't achieve good control with MDI..

But I'm sure has pumps become more popular then they more we will hear of individuals having their pump funding stopped..

On another forum I know several people who have pumps and really shouldn't of had them in the first place.. They've been on pumps for over a year and haven't gained an improvement in control. But that's because they won't adjust any aspect of their pump or how it delivers insulin without prior instructions of their DSN... At this stage you should be very self sufficient with management decisions and adjusting your settings..

Well done Paul. :D

If you need any tips, everydayupsanddowns Mike has been bloggin about his recent conversion.

Well worth a read so you go in with your eyes open.🙂

I've been told I stand very little chance of getting one as things stand at present. I may be the last one standing on MDI in a few years 🙄

Thanks, I will have a read of that. I didn't have to ask, beg nor have a tantrum to get the pump it was just mentioned casually in a conversation (i'm not even sure it was me)and from that moment my consultant has made it his mission.

HI paul,
well done.
Your best bet is to go read Mikes blog which Rob has linked to. And also have a look at the other pumps available
All pumps are here http://www.input.me.uk/alt-insulin-pumps/pump-suppliers/

Then come back and ask all the questions you want.
Perhaps also give your DSN a ring and ask which pumps you will be able to choose from 🙂

I've had a pump since March last year but still don't feel that I know what I'm doing!! 🙄 However, I didn't have to attend any course in order to get it and think I could have done with the additional support. Although my DSN was lovely and helpful.
But it was complicated by major work issues - still struggling to get over those!!
However, my new DSN is going to arrange for me to go on a course asap. Plus I see my new consultant at the end of the month. Luckily, I got mine before moving to Scotland!!
But, am happy to adjust my rates without checking with my DSN and have done for months. And now that Christmas is over, I need to get back on the straight and narrow - can't risk having my pump taken away!!! 😉

Good luck at first appt Grandma!

And congrats Paul. I was used to wearing one in short order. One small price to pay is the occasional snag on door handle😱 Thankfully, tubes stretch. Hasn't happened in a long time - must mean I'm due tomorrow.

Just wanted to add my congratulations Paul to your good news x

Well things went well today got the pump there was only 2 of us there to get them so things werent to bad think I have got the ins and outs of how you do things had a job getting back to the car with the big box I had been given with everything in dident relize there was so mutch to go with it.
Will be askng a few things before long I bet all I have done is read the books all day think I am over doing it so having a rest.
The only thing I nealey had my insulin injection at tea time just forgot I was conected to the pump as you carnt feel it good job I rembered before I did it. Hubby thought that was funny after reading all day about what to do and then putting book down and getting the pen out.
Well hear goes BGs were up this morning as I had only to have 50% of Lantus last night but since having pump on been ok 7.0 6.9 7.0 I have to go back in 2 weeks on my birthday 19th.
With everthing all you are saying about getting a pump I think I have been very luckey if it hadent been for the hold up I was offered 1 and told to go back in 2 week to get it but with the hold up its only been about 4 months.:D

Great news Grandma! Sure you will take to it in no time 🙂 don't be surprised if it takes a week or two for levels to settle... And a month or two to get a basic setup working. I suddenly needed completely different doses after 7-10 days, as did another newbie pumper I know. Settled a lot more after that tho!

Good news about the pump Paul!

People have been very kind in pointing you to my own posts, but the best bit of advice I got was to get hold of a copy of Pumping Insulin by John Walsh (library/Amazon or wherever) and give the first 13 chapters a read before you get the thing. Helped me no end in understanding what to expect and what to look for. Keep us posted on your own journey to Team Pump!

Well done Carol and Yee hah Pauly!

I very much agree with the book recommendation - required reading! LOL

It made a lot more sense eventually after I'd got the pump though, because it's all theory of course until you do.

They are big boxes aren't they? The Roche one is in fact a miniature filing cabinet. They also send supplies in quite big boxes inside ruddy big boxes too. Still all the cardboard is recycleable! We're very green here now instead of only sending em the insides of loo rolls ....... LOL

Fantastic you are getting a pump 🙂 In my case I was just 'given' a pump, I wasn't given a choice.

Rob

.....why will you stand 'very little chance'?

That's great news Carol. I'm glad it all went well 🙂

Well not a bad day with pump things were not tobad through night as well did wake up 3 times and tested just to see and wa 7.2 all 3 times but on getting up at 7.30 Bgs had gone up to 10.0 but were back down to 7.6 at 10.30 and been ok all day.
Just seems a bit strange not having a jab when I have something to eat have gone to get the pen and then had to think 😱 No dont need it😉 But I gess after 37 years its not supprising.
Good look to everyone that has been offered a pump:D
